Has anyone replace their turbo with the fleabay cheaper options? Too good to be true?
The turbo talk is more for one of the usual problems.
Blow by - oil starvation. Based on your findings so far, I think turbo will be fine to keep & use.
Spend up to $100-200 & check it out, or just use it.
Yours is pretty special, it's usually the other boring old problems, I hope they can find out what happened.

Did we find out what broke?

Turbo should be ok, as should the supply pump.

No ####, still don't know what failed, dealer wanted $1,300 to diagnose so we thought we were better off putting the money towards the new engine.
Really didn't want to go down the rebuild road, they are never the same, didn't want to sell a lemon either.

When I get the old engine back I will pull it apart and find out what the hell failed!

              D is 4 Don't take your D4D outback!

Well guys it has been awhile since my last post, all I can say is it has been the worst customer experience of my life, both from the dealer and Toyota Australia! I will have more to say about that later on.

So what happened to my D4D? well the bolt was broken on the counter-balance shaft, the counter-balance shaft moved forward and stripped the oil pump gear which lead to no oil pressure, very disappointing, Toyota Australia are not interested in an explanation why or how this has happened, Toyota Australia seem to think 128,000klms is an acceptable life from a well maintained D4D will full Toyota service history.

The dealer suggested that our Simpson Desert crossing could have caused the damage, calling it "Extreme Conditions" yeah right, not so unbreakable Toyota

And most likely exaggerated through the use of dirty fuel too.

Sorry mate had no issue with dirty fuel, Can't see how dirty fuel could relate to a counter-balance shaft bolt breaking?

I think Bushy was being sarcastic as Toyota usually say "dirty fuel" no matter what the problem is/was.

Toyota is no longer run by car people, it is now run by accountants determined to screw every last cent out of their fast fading reputation.

Ten years from now Toyo will have a similar reputation as Jeep in Australia IMO

I have no time for Toyota Australia, they delivered the worst "Guest Experience" for me, never again, I would rather buy a Tata and know your going to be disappointed!

Very Uncommon. Not personally But yes more on 1kz, still not a big issue.
If only you could talk to Toyota Japan.

                                Hi FWD17
Yours is not the first Balance shaft issue ,in 2014 3days after a Simpson Desert crossing my December 2011 150 Prado 64000km also had the bolts retaining the Balance Shaft come loose. Which in turn chewed the timing case and distributed Alloy particles throughout the entire engine ,turbo etc. I first noticed what could be described as a Death Rattle in engine, shut engine down and towed to Toyota dealer. Was told costs could be up to $18000 to fix ,took three weeks to diagnose luckily I was under warranty for this problem in the end but spent three weeks wondering wether it was Injector or oil pick up faults that May or May not be covered. So I feel for you mate it sucks Bad. Saw the bill that dealer sent to Toyota it was just under $13000 total. New long motor inc turbo.
