  • Threshold for difference in suspension height between left and right side?

    Hi Folks,

I have a 2015 Kakdu with OEM suspension. When it was parked on the driveway (no additional load, other than two child seats) I thought the car was leaning heavily to the right (looking from behind)... A quick measure from ground to top of wheel arch along the centre line revealed a 40 mm difference between the rear left and right. The difference for the front was about 5 mm.

Figuring this was due to the driveway being crook (it does have bit of a slope), pulled it into the garage and did same measurement, this time the difference was 15 mm, still lower on the right. So I proceeded to lift the back using the air suspension. The difference is then just 2-3 mm (still lower on the right). When I brought it back down the normal height, the difference is back to 15 mm again.

My other half's XC60 only has a 2 mm difference between either side parked in the same position.

So, does anyone know what is the threshold for an acceptable difference left and right sides. I figure 15 mm is a bit on the high side. Also, I thought the "Kakadu lean" is generally associated following after market suspension lifts and not operating within factory setting...

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

I believe the factory tolerance is 15mm, have seen it in the dealers service manual. The difference is due to the high pressure in the KDSS system. It stands out with aftermarket suspension because people are taking notice and measuring it. Some aftermarket providers allow you to adjust it out via spacer rings or different Spring lengths.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks... I had a suspicion KDSS might have something to do with it, but wasn't sure what the tolerance was. I guess it can appear quite exaggerated in some instances, depending on the ground conditions (like it was when I first noted it)

      Thanks again

When parked on a slope, the lean will also materialise.

I brought the lean on my Kakadu to the dealer's notice in June. They bled the system, which actually made it worse!
Was asked to take it in a month later so that they could take some measurements for Toyota, checking the difference between the left and right rear as well as checking the part numbers of the front springs. They said Toyota were working on a field fix.
Last week was asked to make an appointment for Toyota to work on the vehicle (together with the other vehicles the dealer had with the same problem.
Have just picked up the car where the state technical manager has replaced both front springs and bled the system.
Car now sits with a left/right difference of 10mm against spec of 20mm.
          Previously it was 39mm.
Feels a bit different now. Seems that Toyota at least acknowledge that was a problem.

            Hey iDestiny,

There is a technique to level the kdss out, you can do it at home with a couple of mates.

Just back the bleed screws off about 3 turns, then whichever side is high, get your mates to jump on the sidesteps and pull it down. While the Prado is leaned over with your mates pulling down on it, nip the bleed screws back up the 3 turns.

I've done a couple of 200's this way and it works well, should work the same for a 150.

This should level it out to a reasonable difference, hopefully less than 10mm between sides.

I have been reading a few posts on the kdss lean from a few posts from here after noticing my 2016 kakadu was leaning on the drivers side most of the time. Same as OP, on level ground it is barely noticable however still a slight lean of around 15mm difference, and on an angle it would be alot more. 2 weeks ago i brought my kakadu for its 10k service and told them about the lean, which they said they would have a look at. Same again Mal1949, they took measurements on their level workshop floor and said there is a 15mm difference. Numbers submitted to Toyota and they would get back to me.

Yesterday i rang them asking whether Toyota had got back to them, and upon checking, the service guy said that Toyota will release a fix next month or in about a month's time. They are aware of the issue, and most likely been working on a fix on it for quite some time. Cant wait till they call me to get it fixed as my OCD is running wild everytime i look at it. Nowadays i park it leaning the other way in my driveway hoping it would balance out.

I have just been through this today and they told me the spec is 20mm, mine was 40mm out on one side when I dropped it into them this morning. Toyota have bled and reset the KDSS but said 20mm difference is the best they could do and within factory spec. I'm waiting for Mr Fido to come home with it to find out the full story.

Mr Fido messaged me something about a DPR being sent off to Toyota, he's going to find out what that means.

For the record, my Kakadu has been lifted but just with KDSS specific springs from Dobinsons and some tweaking of the rear height sensors. It's had a slight lean from the day I got it and before the supension was ever touched. It already had the TJM steel bar on it when purchased 2nd-hand from a dealer, bull bars have been reported as contributing to the lean. It hasn't been so noticeable until a recent off-road trip where the lean became ridiculously apparent after a day of alpine fun.

I've done the leveling procedure myself last year. The main hydraulic valve is on the underside on the vehicle chassis in on the left side, underneath the front passenger seat area. There a little bash plate covering it. I think you need a 14mm socket for the bash plate and a 10 or 12mm socket for the two valves. My Kakadu was leaning left a bit. From memory, I simply backed off the two valves and rocked the car a few times until it sat level. Then tightened up the valves. Too easy.

I got the procedure from the service manual. I'll post it later when I get to my PC.
