  • Bigger wheels and tyres for GX without body modification

    Hi Crew

Im looking to purchase a 120 GX but I'm a little concerned about the stock rims and 225 tyres that are on there. I have seen this question being posted in other forums with a range of answers and opinions, so it would be great to clear them up and this seems the place to do it.

The car is a 2003 GX and has stock steel rims on it. currently 225s on there. I would like to get something wider on there. I have seen the thread with someone confirming that it will fit a 245. is that about as big as it will go? could I fit GXL rims and get a wider set up without installing flares? I want to not be a cop magnet so keeping them pretty legit would be good.

Also other than killing torque and the speedo being out, is there any issue with installing something with a larger rolling diameter?

It will be used as a daily drive and weekend getaway car. A bit of bush, and a fair bit of beach driving. Its only the 2.7L petrol engine so don't want to go to crazy with the wheels.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm hoping to buy it tomorrow.

    cheers!

Hi! I've got a 2004 gx and had the same issue as you. Decided to buy a set of toyota gxl steel wheels and fitted 245's on. Had no dramas over the past few years. Thanks mate, looks looks like the 245s sit flush with the body on those rims. That should be ok, I was hoping for a 265 but sometimes its not worth the risk of a yellow sticker. How much space is there on the inside of the wheel? perhaps a different offset would help achieve the width I'm hoping for.

Before I got the Gxl steel wheels I had a look around at some other rims but there were issues with some not fitting over discs. You'll find the 245's will work well with no need for flares and the police will have zero interest. Best of luck!
