Actually... you know... I'm very tempted to rip it out and see if it's not just the end of the ribbon cable broken at its termination point. Trim, solder, spend $75 on beer...?
On 2nd thoughts nah paid my 75 kiwi fruit now waiting for the mail...

So, the job was easy, maybe half an hour. Clock spring wire assembly arrived from qualitycarpartscomau ebay store (Brisvegas). Stubborn connector on the steering angle sensor, maybe an omen, took a little prising to release. Shouldn't have - more on that later.

Carefully prised SAS from clock spring wire assembly - came off pretty easily.

Positioned old SAS onto new assembly. Some clips didn't settle in without a gentle push.

Reinstall then remove the orange packing tag.

Cruise control is back alive, but the bloody damned stupid ahole steering angle sensor is cranky cos it was disconnected. Now has to be reset with Techstream. If I'd known this I would have cheated and tried to do the job with the sensor still plugged in ie sitting in the car. Would have been fiddly but avoided this step.

Anyway happy the cruise is back alive.

Good outcome for the cruise thoug the steering sensor problem would be pain. Visit to Toyota perhaps? Or get Techstream via eBay?

          Thanks for the pics.

I have TS loaded to an old XP laptop but it doesn't recognise my OBD2 dongle. I will try to buy one that works, but if that fails or drags out I'm going to go see #### soon for some new injectors anyway and I strongly suspect he'll have the toys to reset the SAS. I use the cruise almost all the time and the ESC only a few times per trip so on balance I'm very pleased with the result.

... this is not going well. I received a new OBD2 dongle and Techstream is running & communicating with the car. It is returning 3 DTCs: C120A ECU Initial setting incomplete, C1336 Zero point calibration of deceleration sensor undone, and U0126 Lost communication with Steering Angle Sensor. I can clear C120A and C1336 but cannot clear U0126.
SAS zero point calibration according to my Toyota manual says to drive the vehicle straight ahead at 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 10 seconds, but this requires clearing of all DTCs first.

My current fear is that I have killed the SAS by removing it and so need to invest the $500 odd on a new Spiral cable/SAS assembly then it will come back. But's a big investment with an unknown return.

              Anybody.... Anybody...?
At least my cruise control works...

That's a real bugger. had a quick look at the manual and the SAS sits on the CAN bus (as suspected as you said it lost comms) and this makes it very hard to diagnose without the right tools, and even then I don't think Toyota publish the CANbus addressing anyway.

What a pain. You mentioned in an earlier post that you had trouble getting the connector off. Could there be some damage to this connector perhaps.

Very good question Macro; I don't think the plug is damaged but will investigate when I get a chance. I have also contacted the eBay supplier of the new spiral cable. Since his description of the part specifies re-use of the original SAS I am hoping he might have encountered this before...

Silly question but have you tried disconnecting the battery (for a short while) with everything connected? The SAS may be having trouble connecting to the bus if it is indeed still OK.

Only silly questions are those we don't ask.
Yes, as part of numerous early attempts to get it to forget its problems and also while trying the SST method of SAS reset (which was actually for old hiluxes but somebody on a US FJ forum seemed to get value out of it....)

Haha, no more silly questions. The SAS seems to be fed from two fuses both BAT (ECU B) and IG (ECU-IG no1) Are these OK? Though I'm clutching at straws now as I can't understand how'd they'd blow in the first place.

Had a quick check: the fuses are good. Too lazy to look at the connector so far...

So Macro, turns out checking the connectors was very good thinking, as the nuffnuff who was playing under there last (me) left it unplugged.
So, plugged in, did the reset in TIS VSC then the Test mode then all the trubble lights were banished.

Stability restored. And the short story is that the cruise was fixed for $75 plus a SAS reset. Thanks for your help MacroP.

                                Wow - great outcome.

$75 is certainly better than paying your local dealer $1200 in parts + labour. Plus you got to learn something too. Hopefully this thread will help someone out in the future, including myself as I'm sure I'll get this same spiral cable issue sooner or later.
