The performance of an LED in terms of spread or reach is more weighted towards the lens design. The lens is what brings most of the light into "focus"

When comparing round vs bar, the specs of each must be the same in order to make a fair comparison. So the lens and reflectors all have to be the same. Having said that, the amount of light emitted by a set of LEDs will depend on the pattern that it is arranged in.

In order to double the intensity of a light, you would need to double the qty of the light source at every step. i.e. 1, 2, 4, 8, etc. In a round light, the pattern of the LEDs from an almost circular pattern where each ring of light is compounding the brightness of the entire round light. In a lightbar, the LEDs are arranged linearly so the LED at the extreme end doesn't really overlap the one right in the middle. In this case, there is more spread but the brightness appears lower, which is in contrast to a much brighter spot in a round light.

Also, many 20" light bars which can fit in between the uprights of a bullbar are around the 180W mark. Compared to the 9" LED spotties which are 185W each, there is twice the amount of light with 2 9" spotties vs 1 20" light bar.

In terms of placement, lightbars should be placed up high to maximise its spread. Otherwise a lot of the light will fall directly onto the ground in front of the vehicle which isn't very useful.

Having come back from the bush with a mate with the Illuminators. His lights are definitely brighter than my 28" light bar, but they use twice the power.

No, round or straight makes no real difference. As stated above reflectors and LED efficiency are the real factors to consider.

This is a good informative thread. The question remains what is the minimum distance required for adquate illumination? I am in the market for a decent set of spotties and do not see much sense in lighting up the road a kilometer ahead (a waste of amps I reckon). I would have thought probaly three or four times the stopping distance should be enough for most drivers as its the wildlife that comes out of the darkness from the side that tends to cause grief. A mate has a couple of pencil spotties and all they do is blind you with reflections from signs well ahead still in darkness. This does not help the night vision.

That they do. I've just ordered the 9" version for $199 with free postage and 10 4wd Action Magazines.
Im keen to see how they perform!

Good on you Spilsy. I also note that the 7" version has about 1/2 the output of tyhe 9"

This is my just fitted Supacentre 9" spotties.
Pretty helpful when I used it in the previous foggy night. Unfortunately the dashcam video has been overwritten. For $230 with the wiring harness, I'm happy

Supacentre 9" spotties .....are absolutely fine, great lights for the price, (in fact they seem to better than many that are more expensive) and since installing them i've done a couple of trips and wouldn't be without them now.

Can someone please post a photo of them fitted to an ARB bar. On a 120 series would be better but a 150 will do. Thanks.

I'm running SunYee Lightway 9inch round LED, 370watts. Paid $279 posted. Holy Moly they are bright ! I've never seen anything like it, this is my first time using LED driving lights having come from IPF900s in Halogen, they are piddly yellow candles in comparison to the Lightways.

Before I order Supacentre lluminator 9" Round LED Driving Lights.

                            2. questions.

Does mounting 2 of these 9"lights in front of the 150 grille have any detrimental effect on cooling?

Supacentre also sell light bars at what looks like silly cheap prices. Can they be any good at this price?

                            thanks,

                            Max.

You would need quite a few lightbars to get the same lumens as 2 round 9" LED spotties. Maybe look at some of the 4-row lightbars if you want equivalent light output.

All old thread I know but have a question in regards to spotties and possibly leds. On my existing work vehicle (150 gxl) I have been running the 9" illuminators and have been very happy with them. we have just purchased new vehicles (150 gxl) but the commercial decision has been made to have these installed with Toyota original alloy bars. Now have the problem that there is not enough room between the bolt holes and the grill to install the 9" illuminators so am looking to see what alternatives are out there that give good performance.
I am a led (round) convert but due to their need to have heat management in the body design it looks like I may have to go back to halogen unless someone has gone through the process and has some ideas on alternatives.
Have been searching on the net but possibly not using the right terms as haven't had much luck as yet.

Can anyone help or provide advice?

                                Thanks

                                Rod
