    Hi Ursus

I have a 2010 petrol GXL with a manual transmission, according to the trip computer I'm getting about 13.3 on the highway and 16 around town.

For a car that weighs 2.2 tons, the petrol gets it moving very fast - accelerating and overtaking are no problem at all. I went with petrol as I don't do very much towing too and it's much more reliable in the long run compared to the diesel.

I have a 2016 Prado Kakadu V6 and it has awesome performance and overtaking ability. The diesel is pathetic by comparison. The down side is that the fuel consumption is pretty aweful. I average 16.5/100 around town and this can drop to 15's on the highway but at 110ks/hour with a load and headwind it can go up to 20l/100k's which is pretty aweful. Although I love the high specs in the Kakadu, this limits the modifications you can make which has really frustrated me. In hindsight, I wish I has bought a new and cheaper V8 Landcruiser, which I will in few years when the lease runs out on the Kakadu.

If you are worried about fuel economy, buy a Prius.

You cant go wrong with either the petrol or diesel - both have pros and cons, but they are built on the same base car which is bloody awesome!!

I've run my 120 v6 on 91 octane for years.
No issues. And when I dyno'd it about 5 months ago it had only lost about 6 kW at wheels over last 8 years! And back then I ran on 98.. Till it out priced itself.

Happy with the economy and performance of my 2.8 auto GXL. Still young (about 3500k) but getting about 8 to 9 /100 even in the city. I am expecting performance and economy to improve further as is fully runs in. I test drove a V6 and it was obviously more responsive if that is a priority. LC200 is a good upgrade on performance but prices on new or low km now seem silly. Would probably go for LC200 for towing large vans/boats.

I received three new work vehicles last week, two new SR 4WD Hilux’s and a GXL Prado, all with the 2.8 D4D. While the engines are still brand new and need to loosen up (the 4WD’s still only have less than 200km on them) I’ve got to say I’m very impressed with the 2.8. I don’t expect race car performance, but I reckon they’ve got more than enough get up and go. I’ve driven the V6, and its silky smooth and powerful, but its diesel for me all the way. I should add that our 4WD’s are used as emergency first response vehicles and work in a fairly hard environment. The diesel gives plenty of torque and more than enough grunt that doesn’t leave me wanting for more. Like I say, I’m very impressed and after driving them, I will soon be buying one for myself.

While they go ok, they don't offer anymore go than the 3L, 10% just isn't enough to make any significant difference, the same peak power says it all.

                    Go Petrol

I had a new 150 series GXL Petrol Prado and in 2014 got a new 150 series Diesel VX Prado. After owning both options my recommendation would be to get Prado Petrol VX. By far best one to drive (petrol is a much better performer than diesel and VX also outperforms GXL in handling off and on road).

Petrol VX is the sweet spot in Prado range.

I did test drive 200 series but was disappointed my its lack of interior room. Prado 150 is slightly more comfortable inside for family of 5 than the LC 200 series in spite of 200 being bigger outside. The main downside of 150 for me is the third row of seats which rob it off the much needed boot space.

You press the pedal to the floor and... except for the sound nothing happens. Very sluggish acceleration, and I suspect when fully loaded and slightly uphill overtaking can be a dodgy issue. I tried switching the gear box to manual and downshifting, but the effect was more or less the same.

I am gravitating towards 200 kW petrol Prado and want to ask people who have them about their opinions. What is real life petrol consumption? Obviously, petrol engine has less torque. Does it affect offroad driving? Is the petrol consumption offroad goes through the roof?

The reason I am asking all this is that I am still hesitating between petrol Prado and diesel Landcruiser 200. They are more or less similar in specs (except for torque, of course), and for the same price Prado has more toys. I would appreciate a lot if you guys could share your opinion on this.

Well, after three months wit I finally got my Kakadu last week. Only drove about 800 km and still getting used to it. It is a heavy car. In spite of petrol it feels a bit sluggish after my previous, an Aurion. Though considering that it's at least a ton heavier this is no surprise. Performs great in town and on a highway, and I eve tested it a little on the dirt road in the Blue Mountains. Bells and whistles are nice, and the car drives on radar cruise control at least 70% of the time, in town and out.

I can see the whole shopping saga ahead of me: roof rack, compressor, roof top tent, winch (I have an ARB bar), set of strong lights - that's the start. There is a 4x4 show in Sydney in October, and it will be useful for me to have a look around.

Yeah I noticed this comment also. Are you tripping?
My old man has a 200 and it's basically a saloon inside. We often take my 150 GXL down the coast, heaps of beach work and it's super cramped for 5 adults, especially the 3 in the back. Middle seat is atrocious. Love my Prado but it definitely isn't spacious.
Basically counting down the days until the lease is up and I can get a new 200. They truly are the pinnacle of 4WD's.

It will loosen up a bit. They won't be quick as aurion. Aurion's kick arse and put some Commodores and Falcons to shame. The 150's torque starts to kick arse around 3500rpm then she gets up and goes. My 120 had the torque down lower then my 150 about 2500rpm (both petrol) but the 150 certainly has more go and don't get me wrong my 120 went well, I loved it. There a great engine in both the 120 & 150. Hard to tell just off feel but I reckon my 120 was quicker off the mark but the 150 has it on the freeway I reckon. Will shoot up over the speed limit shit easy in a short time

....mmm....might have test drove a 200 series VOLVO....perhaps....but a 200 series LC has a lack of interior room?????

Before we get accused of "misquoting" Kapitan...perhaps you might like the opportunity to clarify what you mean by "lack of interior room" ... are you referring to a 200 series Landcruiser compared to a current Prado?

Yes, but issue is probably only noticeable to tall people.

I have family of 5 with 3 being over 190 cm tall. We notice lack of room in most cars on the market. Sunroof is the worst offender as it really lowers ceiling height in cars. Not that any of my shorter friends ever noticed this sunroof effect on car interior space!!

Re LC200 there is no adequate toe room for 2nd row passengers once there is a tall driver and/or front passenger in LC200. Therefore 2nd row tall passengers feet simply do not fit ...

No such issue in Prado as it does have toe room and more headroom space (unless buying Kakadu - there is no headroom space in Kakadu as the sunroof and roof mounted screen rob it of its headroom space).

The little extra headroom and toe room in Prado makes a big difference for us.

New Kluger is for us by far most roomy car we could find on the market with Prado coming in second (so we have both). LC200 lost by an "inch of toe room" ... Pity as I loved its larger boot and of course the V8 !!
