    Thanks, Mark

I am gradually getting to terms with my original decision regarding petrol. Thanks for the advice to switch to VX, now I have another paranoia to work on! Seriously though, I will look into it.

    Thanks again

      Hey,

Going to the VX puts an extra $10,000 in your pocket for a trip to ARB or TJM!!

I moved from a V6 Kluger and was also unsure about which engine to choose for a new Prado. I tested a 5 speed auto V6 (Kakadu) and had several test drives in the 2.8 auto (GXL). In the end I went for a 2.8 Auto GXL and after owning it several months I am happy with the performance, even in town and on highways. Obviously less sporty that the 4.0 Prado, but still responsive in day to day driving. I have leveled out at 10.0 consumption with mixed driving. Both engines good, but re-sale strength and long distance touring ability/costs tipped it towards the 2.8. I agree that future engine trends will be different, but hard to predict.

I feel the choice between Petrol and Diesel can change over time. If petrol is cheap then the choice is more skewed towards petrol. If the new diesel proves to have injector problems then again the choice would again be Petrol. If the new engine proves to be a winner and bulletproof then maybe diesel is a better choice. If there were a proven V6 diesel I would trade in my Petrol in a heartbeat but until that day comes my 2012 V6 Petrol 130k on the clock that includes lots of towing up to 2500kg around Oz is my choice because never have I had one issue and that's why I bought it in the first place. Oh and don't ever let anybody tell you need to buy a diesel if you intend to tow.

I've recently been asking myself similar questions about my next prado. I,Ve had both petrol and diesel. The 3.4 litre V6 was a gem with no problems and only recently sold it with 470,000km on the clock. My 3.0 D4D has now got 280,000km behind her with high maintenance required to keep it from detonation. So far so good and it hasn't let me down across the country twice, WA, NT and Tassie. But it's a constant worry on my mind it,s not gonna be the next one reporting a detonation. Hence I'm considering going back to the petrol. My concern is the availability of premium fuel in remote areas. Can anyone tell me if its just a matter of adding a bottle of octane booster when premium is not available?

Normal unleaded runs fine in the T v6 engines.

                Hey all,

                There is another interesting aspect to the petrol vs diesel debate which will become more and more prominent. Norway is planning on moving completely to electric vehicles by 2025;

                http://www.independent.co.uk/environ...-a7065616.html

Norway can of course afford to do this as one of the richest countries in the world. They currently subsidise the cost of electric vehicles, you can drive them in T2/bus lanes, free parking and charging stations all over Oslo. You can see Nissan Leafs, BMW i3 and Teslas everywhere in Norway.

...the fossil fuel cost in the cycle life of an electric vehicle doesn't seem to be a factor for them at the moment, probably because 99% of their electricity is hydro.

I can't see this happening in Australia with the long distances involved, not ever!

Diesel electric seems a good idea to me - an electric motor on each wheel.

                    Rusty,
Are you saying the 150 4.0 V6 will run ok on 91 unleaded despite Toyota recommending 95 premium unleaded.

People have used 91. Not sure what it effects.

In central Aus most of the petrol is Opal low aromatic fuel and my 120 V6 has run perfectly on it on many trips. The 120 is set up for 91 but mine has always seemed much smoother on 95 with 98 feeling similar but for more money. Maybe Toyota saying 95 for the 150 V6 is just recognition of this. In any event 95 is becoming like rocking horse crap or unicorns in Sydney with the spread of the rubbish "94- E10" [ which my 120 loathes and chews up at up to 2l/100km faster]. If it really worries you carry a bottle or 2 of octane booster for outback trips but my experience is that 95 is more widely available elsewhere in Aus than it is in Sydney [ Opal areas excepted.]

All factory vehicles will run on 91, just with reduced performance. The computer has knock sensors that can hear the flame front starting from low octane fuel and will pull back the timing to prevent detonation.

That's how all cars remain perfectly in tune.

I've got the 120 V6. I had diesel prior. And petrol before the diesel. Unless I'm going to retire now at 48 and do a lot of towing my next one will be petrol. Mines up for sale now and I'm still debating between a 150 kaka petrol or Y62 patrol (v8 petrol) either way will be second hand. I'm looking at a kaka petrol tomorrow morning. Diesel certainly has better resale no doubt BUT I enjoy the up n go of the petrol and in the back of my mind I know I'll always be concerned about injector issues. I also read a lot about people with diesels who are always spending big $$$ on chips, exhausts etc to get more go. I've never looked at that for my V6... Each to their own but V6 for me... Cheers

gday ursus, i own a 2006 v6 petrol, it is now 2016, 10 year old prado, it goes like a rocket even with all my camp gear 2 adults 1 dog and 1 16yr old. Now the only differences i have seen is diesel has more torque of course and cheaper fuel and longer range thats it. Now for my petrol, quicker response for overtacking, shorter fuel range 180ltr standard tank and a bit thirstier but i am happy with it, besides the ridiculous latteral movement of the ARB bar and less maintanance. i refuse to buy a diesel at the moment because i have not seen/read any really outstanding engineering improvements from toyota for me to be a convert, (not saying it wont happen) but you can get around 1500-1700ks out of a tank of diesel around the same age. I am willing to payout for more fuel whatever the cost with less maintanace. Now in saying that there have been improvements in engine managment systems but i will always own a petrol until i am satified. And either way my petrol is quite capable and a willing paticipant for going offroad just alittle advice i would probably upgrade your suspension anyway as you normally would do cheers.

Did my first decent trip in the new Prado, Melbourne to Port Macquarie and back, about 2600km. Averaged 3/4 of a tank each way. This is loaded with 6 people and gear and sitting on 110-113km on the cruise control for a lot of the trip. Dropped into 6th gear easily (1700rpm at 110km/h). Pretty pleased with how it went, very comfortable in 1st 2 rows, 3rd row, pretty flat seat cushion, but quiet, fast enough and smooth to drive, Very happy with the new Prado.
