  • Petrol vs Diesel

I am aware that over 80% of all Prado sales are diesel. I drove 2.8 diesel Prado and found it quite nicely behaving vehicle. Except for overtaking on the highway at higher speeds. You press the pedal to the floor and... except for the sound nothing happens. Very sluggish acceleration, and I suspect when fully loaded and slightly uphill overtaking can be a dodgy issue. I tried switching the gear box to manual and downshifting, but the effect was more or less the same.

I am gravitating towards 200 kW petrol Prado and want to ask people who have them about their opinions. What is real life petrol consumption? Obviously, petrol engine has less torque. Does it affect offroad driving? Is the petrol consumption offroad goes through the roof?

The reason I am asking all this is that I am still hesitating between petrol Prado and diesel Landcruiser 200. They are more or less similar in specs (except for torque, of course), and for the same price Prado has more toys. I would appreciate a lot if you guys could share your opinion on this.

oh god, not this again. Sorry but it's been discussed to death.
    I'll summarise:
Petrol: Thirstier, faster/quicker off the mark, less chance of an engine failure, cheaper.
Diesel: More low down torque, good for towing heaving loads, D4D engines stood for D for Detonation. 2.8Ltr is a new engine so too new to have a reliably metric yet, better resale because it costs more to start with.

Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

      Hey ursus,

      See post #139 in this thread for a numerical comparison between diesel and petrol Prados that uses 10 years of historical fuel data;

The thing that you aren't haven't taken into consideration is overall maintenance costs of diesel vs. petrol.

Looking at straight fuel, diesel would seem to be lower Cost of Ownership.

            Hey cfryback,

The service schedule has been included in the cost comparison in the model that uses historical fuel data. The average cost saving by running diesel will be in the order of $5-600/year.

That model is based on diesel vs ulp for 120 series, and that difference will reduce for 150 petrol drivers (slightly more fuel efficient 1GR-FE with VVTi on intake and exhaust), and the difference will reduce a bit more if you use premium 98.

The model is only for comparing Prados, and comparing a petrol Prado with a diesel 200 would require knowing the 200 average economy.

New V6 requires min Premium Unleaded 95 RON
How many km's were on the clock for the 2.8 diesel you drove? They are very sluggish the first few 1000's you do.
Diesel resale is massive in comparison to petrol equivalent. I investigated an 8yr old petrol and diesel and the price diff was 15k over a number of vehicles with similar km's.
Fuel consumption has been done to death but the new V6 gets 15-16l/100km city vs 10l/100km for the diesel.
If you can afford the 200 series don't hesitate the D4D V8 is unreal.

14 flat for city driving 150 V6 petrol. Freeway / highway gets about 11.5-12 to 100.

Do you mean they get faster after a few thousand kilometres? I test drove diesel and found it fairly slow when overtaking at high speeds. Does it get better?

No question when comparing the 150 to a 200 series Cruiser.
If the Cruiser is an option for you, go for it, they are amazing to drive.
I prefer driving my old man's 200 to my new 150 any day of the week.

Yep I believe that to be correct. I dont know if its the case that I am getting used to the diesel but it seems more responsive at higher speeds now. It might be that the engine is very tight when new.

I drove 200 Cruiser and like it very much. However, it's over 30k extra for the same bells and whistles as in Kakadu. I put the deposit down for petrol Prado, but am still agonizing if I should change it for diesel. Resale doesn't worry me too much. After all I am buying it to drive, not trade. And who knows what it's going to be like in five or seven years time.

Not to blow my own horn, but in some countries there is a movement against diesels. Apparently they banned diesel cars in Delhi, India. In Great Britain there are also a lot of noise about diesels being more polluting than petrol. Who knows, diesel can get out of fashion in a few years time, petrol get get cheaper and so on. Once again, that part doesn't worry me.

What does worry me is the utility of the vehicle. In the city there is no doubt for me that petrol is superior. It is smoother, faster, more agile. Once again, for me. Off road is where my demons keep me awake at night. Diesel seems to be superior for outback activities (diesel demon): more powerful at low revs, more torque etc. On the other hand (petrol demon), one of the best and classic off-roaders - Jeep Wrangler - is petrol. I was considering buying that, but it is a bitch for commuting.

                              Hey ursus,

There are moves to ban diesel cars from London, and it has already happened in Paris. Eventually diesel will be taxed more, even here in Australia. As we've seen with VW and others, it is difficult to get diesels to pass emission regulations, and the technologies introduced to control them, such as egr, can prove a hindrance rather than a benefit.

I wouldn't worry about the petrol off-road, I've driven mine through everything, been across Oz twice, never missed a beat. If you're worried about range in remote conditions, get a roof rack and/or rear bar and carry spare jerries.

I might suggest moving to a VX instead of a Kakadu, just so you get a coil spring rear end, which will give you better performance and more options later on when you're off roading.

                              You won't regret the petrol!
