They should do the right thing & buy him a bottle for his trouble they caused.
One time I took a slab for the boys at the "best" Subaru dealer in melb, after they rebuild the gearbox on one of my wrx's, only to find numerous problems including the tail shaft bolts finger loose. If there's a drink to take, do it after a few weeks :-) the service manager & service was excellent, but usual stuff coming from out the back.

I agree with the way bushy put it, yes a nice gesture, in a perfect world they would each have a bottle to exchange.

    Just nice!

Good outcome OGF, a slab is good on you I think , worth is to get the worry out of the way regarding your possible expenses ,
And good on the workshop too , they won't do that again and still have their credibility , and for PP , I'm sure your workshop were monitoring this forum too.

For those of you who have been following my Prado saga. I called out today to see how the engine rebuild was going.

The brand new engine has had the refurbished head bolted on and a new turbo was delivered today. The injectors have been checked recalibrated and installed.

The fiddly bits are happening now - and they started work this afternoon. Hope to get it back on Friday with a zeo km engine!!

When it gets all back togther it will of course have new fuel filters (all 3 of them which I had and offered up), oil filter and much added oils and lubricants, new upper and lower radiator hoses and a pulley belt (which I also had). Bought these spares when me and my brother Rob and me did our half lap last year.

This vehicle will last another 400,000 km and I know it will be looked after at GSAS as they admitted today they now know more about this problem. I taught them a lot thanks to Anthony. I have also bought them a borescope camera as a present so they can check the oil sump screen as they have not been doing it. They are going through the MTIA to recover the costs from Toyota because it looks like the problem was caused by Toyota proving injector seats which were replaced by a modified unit in 2008 before my car was actually built. Go figure.

The cost is going to be in excess of $10,000 and as much as $12,000 of which I have agreed I will pay for the turbo because it was not destroyed by the oil failure but apparently ingestion of dust before I bought the vehicle. This might be up to $1,000.

        Happy at this stage.

Good to hear its coming along.
Paying a grand for a new motor & a good outcome is not so bad at all.
But, I like to be 100% clear, oil starvation kills the turbo every time, going by memory you will probably find I mentioned it when we spoke or a previous post, as I don't think it had been brought up.
The oil needs to lubricate the turbo, it had none!
It was not ingestion of dust lol...... Where did this supposedly appear from? Lol......
I could be wrong, but you know........

No biggy, just like you to understand the facts.
            Hopefully your motoring soon!

            Cheers,

Thanks Anthony. Yes you did mention it and I included in my request to the services to have it checked. In speaking to the mechanic yesterday he said he could not figure where the dust came from because they replaced the air filter and it was still ok. It might have been ingested before I got the car. However may argue that we split the difference.

Don't mess around with the Old Grey Fart ,
good outcome and good on you for keeping your cool over this , I would have gone in guns blazing and stuffed up my relationship with an otherwise not bad workshop.

As Willie Nelson famously sang - "I'm on the road again ...."

Visited the workshop yesterday afternoon late in the day". They were just finishing up with a wheel alignment and the chief mechanic said he wanted to take the Prado for a long drive and then check to make sure that there were no leaks. Agree to pick it up this morning at 8am. When I got there Simon had already taken it for another test run and said he was happy with it and turned it over to me.

He asked for me to bring it back in 1000 km because he wants to drop the oil again and check everything out. Apparently Matt from BDG was also very helpful and cooperative with my workshop.

They have done a sterling job and gave me copies of all of their purchase invoices for my records. I said I would put all of mine together to assist them fight their case with the Toyota dealership.

It is very quite and the transmission seems smoother.

It has now been thoroughly washed and polished - as it still had the mud on it from my Brindies trip. The workshop however had thoroughly cleaned the engine bay.

Very happy with them. He asked me to monitor i9t closely over the next few days particularly the fluids.

I have said I will report next Thursday when I will be happy to deliver the most expensive bottle of wine from my small cellar - a Stanton and Killeen (Rutherglen) 2008 Durif and the NDI borescope I have bought for the workshop.

Not sure if I want to keep going to toyota for services on mine, gsa sound like they stick by what they do and sell, and more importantly take pride in their work ethics, can be hard to find a work shop like that.. Might have to give them a try.. All the best.. Cheers Owen

Very happy to recommend them. They know 4x4s very well and Garry himself drives a 120 although it is petrol. The chief mechanic is Simon (his son) and sets a high standard.

                              The oil pick up.

                              The injectors.

                              The seats.

                              Piston #3.

                              The story.
                              1. Yes oil pick up blocked cause by blow-by.
                              2. BDG have yet to inspect the injectors but don't expect they have failed.
                              3. GSM says that it looks like one of the seats failed but these were genuine Toyota seats and 'they won't accept' liability.
                              4. There is a hair line fracture in #3 cylinder.

My response was great - but someone is responsible and 'are you sure the seats were installed correctly' because it has to be either (a) faulty injectors (BDG), faulty seats (Toyoto) or GSM for faulty installation. The cracked piston was a surprise given they had the head off and cleaned everything up when the head job was done.

GSM have given me 3 options from $7500-$9000-$11500

They have asked for a couple more days.

I made my position quite clear I will await advice from BDG re injectors and seats (they are getting the lot) but will then start action to get a remedy because this should not have happened at 40,000 kms after injectors installed.
                              See piston3#

If a set of injectors were left too long, then it rattles, then you get new injectors, if they have not taken the time to do the job carefully, amongst other things, a small crack could be missed.
There is a member here who I believe experienced this, I will try & find him or the story.
Anyway it will be rattly & eventually........
