  • Clicking / ticking noise at low RPM, high load 90 series 3.4V6

**Posted in wrong section. Reposting here**

    Hey guys,

Mr. Prado is making a weird noise as mentioned in the title. For example going up a hill in second gear (about 1700-2000RPM, car does NOT struggle and will still accelerate as normal. I'm not being a retard and trying to go up a hill at like idle RPM lol!) it'll make a clicking noise and once the car has picked up momentum it'll stop. I don't think it's speed or gear related, as it's at any time under 2kRPM ish and heavy load that it'll make this noise.

Haven't had a chance to look underneath for anything loose but I suspect a couple of things maybe?

My clutch is making an annoying squeaking noise when depressed. It engages fine and AFAIK in good condition. Can't see any leaks from the clutch slave but maybe could be related to this?

Another suspect is the handbrake cable rattling..? It's pretty fecking loose. It needs to be pulled up all the way to the top, and even then on a hill it won't fully engage. The car will NEED to be in gear because the bastard will just roll down the hill lol.

Has anyone come across these issues at all? Had a quick google but alas, I cannae find anything.

    Thanks guise.

Hand brakes in the 90 series are notoriously useless in my experience. Not sure about the ticking though.
1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

Yep the handbrakes are useless and tightening the cable does nothing - they need be pulled apart and from memory the drum brakes adjusted/replaced.
With the clutch noise i thought straight away the thrust bearing but they get noisy when the clutch is released, so not sure on that one.
In regards to the clicking noise, my old Triton does a similar thing in the colder months and its coming from the tacho cable! I can't figure it, maybe the grease works better over summer and in winter becomes thicker...I haven't pulled it apart to fix (just re-read your post and noticed it happens under load - don't know!)
Maybe some others can throw some ideas up, you're bound to find the culprit if we keep trying.
        Cheers,
        Mark.
