  • Another step on the journey to the 2017 GTG happened today. We have now booked the airline tickets for Kristy and the boys so they can fly to Darwin and I will pick them up from there.
By doing it this way the boys can spend another week in school and don't have to travel the 4000km to the start of the GTG. They land in Darwin late Friday/ early Saturday and after a sleep in we will hit the road and take two days to do the 800km to the start of a much anticipated GTG.

Off to a great start. Looks like you now only need someone from both NSW and SA and all states will be represented.

You have to get from Broome to Lake Argyle for the start and then back to Halls Creek for the trip down the Tanami if I remember correctly.

We will leave that up to the individual. On the GTG there will be 2 places that National Park fees apply, Bell Gorge (Silent Grove) and Windjana Gorge. This is $12 per car per visit, so it doesn't matter how long you stay in each place, you pay the entry fee once only. This is separate to the camping fees.
If you are planning on visiting the Bungles/ Karijini/ Ningaloo/ Kalbarri and many others, it is usually worth while getting a 4 week holiday pass from DPAW for $44 available on line. I bought an annual pass last week as we were planning on using it in the Stirling Ranges last weekend (but didn't). The NP just out the back of us is now paid entry too so we will use it.

Check with the Dept Of Parks & Wildlife against your itinerary and see if you would get your $$ worth. If your not going anywhere else, then paying the $24 is cheaper. You can pay cash at each entry point, but it has to be correct money as they are self-registration.
Just be careful as the passes don't include Monkey Mia and from memory or the Tree Top Walk at Walpole and some other attractions.

I will be sending out more detailed info on this once the registration period is complete.

                Cheers

I look forward to the further instructions.

It does look like an annual pass will suit us best as we will be in WA for 7 weeks and plan on using it quite a bit hopefully.

Yep - will travel that road twice.

We have a fixed date of May the 20th for a friend's wedding in Broome....

So we will be doing a counter-clockwise route.

                    • Just wondering what others are thinking with regards to taking a second spare wheel?

I do have a complete spare I could take but just wondering what others are doing/thinking.

I'm probably going with an inner tube as spare to the spare.

i wont be taking a second spare. Remember, we all have the same wheels. If there's an emergency while we're all together, I'm sure we'll work through it. If you're going to be doing a lot of remote travel on the way there or back and not going with anyone else who has the same spare, maybe you might need it but a spare and a good repair kit will be enough for me.

My tire guy doesn't recommend inner tubes with alloys due to issues with the valves. Ok in an emergency perhaps

When we did the Gibb in 2006 we took 2 spares due to hearing horror stories and never had a single flat. But we were probably running a lot lighter than you will

                              • As far as tyres go, we carry just 2 spares, 1 on the car and 1 on the camper. All are interchangeable. A good plug kit is advisable.
As has been said above, we're all using the same wheels more or less, so won't be an issue while we're on the GTG. Maybe carry an extra spare if you're doing the Tanimi by yourself.

Regarding the Facebook page, there's been quite a few requests to join, that's great and most people are easy to spot. But some I see I don't recognise, so if you want to join let us know who you are(PP name).
                                Can't we just keep travelling?
