  • Bush Pinstriping...........a solution ?

I know, the basic question remains..........."so why did you buy a 4wd ?"

This is my second 4wd and considerably larger (read that as wider) than my first. It seems that even on benign tracks I'm getting pinstriped by blackberries and the like.

Here's a solution. Have a look at all the pics. I have used 0.8 mm magnetic sheet cut to the panel shape. Looks awful in this first pic doesn't it ?

Look closer. The whole side of the car is actually sheeted. Only the rear quarter panel is still white. The guard and door sheet is painted with rattle can in the car's colour code and almost completely disappears (look closely at the above picture around the door handle).

Will it work ? I don't know. It doesn't fall off or move, I've done one mild trip with just a door panel. Coverage is not as good as I'd like but I could always make smaller sheets to fill in the gaps. The 0.8 follows contours reasonably well but not good enough to go around some of the body curves. The 0.6 sheet I'm advised is probably not magnetic enough to stay on.

Magnetic sheet cost $190 for a 15 metre roll, paint $120 and a bit of time cutting out the shapes. Cheaper than the $1800 I saw quoted for clear plastic sheeting. If your car is already white, that'd be ideal.

As suggested below by BILLOzr, it's not something you'd leave on all the time. From my limited experience playing with it, I think you'd need to do a quick wash down of the car panels with half a bucket of water and similarly wipe down the back of the magnetic sheets prior to application. It's otherwise easy to get a piece of crud between the sheet and duco. So it's something that would be part of my day-before trip preparation.

    Anyway, just an idea.

    Nice work.

Just a question, will magnetic sheets leave rust stains when it gets wet?

Good point. I don't know. Whatever the magnetic material itself is, it seems well encased in plastic front and back. Magnets don't seem to rust themselves.

I'll keep an eye out for that and report if it does.

It's not something you'd leave on all the time anyway. It's a really good idea.

Great idea mate, be keen to see how this works out for you.

I have been considering getting mine vinyl wrapped but the cost is up there.

A coat of plasti dip could be another solution.

I wouldn't think so, this magnetic sheet is commonly for signage on many vehicles that spend years exposed to the elements with no problems. The magnetic particles are encapsulated within the rubber material.

The may be some issues with dirt and dust getting trapped between the sheet and panel causing small scratches but should save the panel from those big pinstripes. As long as the leading edge of the sheet doesn't lift it should stay put.

You might find if dirt gets under the magnet it will scratch the paint (i have seen this before) take them off before you go through a bog hole or a water crossing because they tend to lift off with the water/mud going past them if its deep.

If its general dry stuff they work great!

Thanks gents for comments and tips. I think the issue of dirt getting between the sheets and duco could be a real problem. I think the comment re the worth in general dry stuff is probably spot on. I will be trying them out and will come back after some trips with any problems.

7 years and many off-road adventures my "Dune" paint has seen thousands of bush-pin stripes. 99% have come out with a little rub using a very mild scratch remover and I always keep up with the canubra wax.

Once upon a time pin stripes were a badge of honour for those who took their 4WDs beyond the shopping centres and soccer ovals. Now, you want to put a condom on your car.

Give it a very heavy waxing on the sides before you go out into pinstriping territory. It helps to prevent them as the surface is slipperier. Another wax after the trip if needed to remove any that do get there.

We used those as signs on our courier cars. On the very hot summers days it ended up sticking to the paint. I think the plastic melted. Just a thought.

I am intrigued to know how well a full vinyl wrap would hold up to bush abuse?

My solution for bush pin striping, well I brought a white car and plan to buff them out just before selling....
