But a stock Suburu Forester is hardly a rally car haha. As much a rally car as a stock Mitsubishi Lancer maybe? I know what you mean about driving ability. Pajero's would be the number one privately owned 4wd that I've seen bogged in sand over the years more than any other. I just put it down to the fact that since the mid 2,000's they're favourably bought as towing vehicles and when some of those owners take them 4wding they may not fully know what to do and this includes such basic things as tyre pressures and knowing when to stop accelerating when initially getting stuck. The beginners guide "Super Select" 4wd system with beginners level instructions on what gear to select for what terrain is testament to that.

Next challenge for you in the mighty bullet proof Subaru can be the Byfield State Forest destination Five Rocks campground? Softest sand I've ever driven on. The kioske attendant told me to forget what I knew of tyres pressures with Fraser Island and go down to 10psi, sometimes lower depending on how hot it is for the long uphill section heading in and he wasn't kidding. I saw a few cars over a few days give up after a couple of hours trying, turn around and leave.
Maybe, but I have won plenty of bets one memorable occasion was on the super soft gavel sand at Coonar south of Bundy. Took the turbo through there and remember it weights less than 1400kgs so anytime you get stuck ONE person can push it out.

Anyway, the Bach was about 20m wide and soft, and the dunes 10ft high. Only one way on and off and that was up a 1:1 sand slope with NO run up. After a few beers my farming mates who had a V8 cruiser and V6 Hilux both tried Evans failed to get off the beach to camp that evening.

I was laughing my arse off whiting then try to get 2.5T of metal moving over 20m and up the dune. No dice. So when they asked me to put my money where my mouth was I proceeded to drive up and down the slope several times, no dramas.

Why? 170kw and proper AWD = rally car off road performance. 0-100in 5.9sec standard. Do the math.

I drank for free that camping trip.

I think the lower weight of the Subi would help it to float over the sand. I always enjoy the challenge of taking a less capable car into challenging places.

Wow very impressive indeed. Would've been good to be there to see that. I bet your mates were very proud of your efforts and also for the unleashed leopard with the safety off in the form of a Subaru Forester.

We were camped at Kinkuna NP once on the dunes (just north of Woodgate Beach) and the beach sand was wayyyyy too boggy for us to be driving on. It had a coarse grain sand with tiny bits of shell mixed into it that would swallow a sky scraper. I backed my car down onto it to test it out by trying to drive back up and couldn't. The car was reluctant to go anywhere without bogging down. So I had to winch back up onto the dune. One late afternoon just on dusk with the tide 3/4 in some mad bugger was driving up the beach is late model red Jeep Wrangler. The beach had a convincing slope to it and he was trying to steer the car up onto higher ground away from the water but it wasn't playing ball and just kept pushing straight. We flagged him down to our exit off the beach otherwise he would've missed it as it was getting dark. He was panicking by this stage so he was lucky we were there to help him. He tried and tried to get his car to face towards it and he got easily bogged. The car just didn't want to do the move once he had it stationary.

I had to anchor the rear of my car to a tree with a tree trunk protector and jump on the brakes of my car while winching. I used a snatch block on a tree to run a 90 deg winch line down to the Jeep which was facing parallel to the ocean and side on to the winch line. My mate in his Patrol parked at the top of the exit track and ran a straight winch line to the Jeep. We dragged the front end of it around 90 deg on an uphill beach slope to face the exit track and then pulled it up straight on 30 mins later with a re-adjustment angle near the end. Man was he relieved. He would've lost his car that night in the surf otherwise.

Anyway I better stop carrying this convo on in this thread or I'll get the big don't argue from Supreme Court judge for straying from the topic.

What tyre pressures were they running? The V6 4l can do it in under 9secs which is ample to get airborne over dunes with little or no run up. I have experienced this for myself many a time while all others are struggling and I just literally shoot over the top of the dune. I can see why a Forester would also be able to get over without much effort being the turbo edition but with the stock 2.5l boxer there's no hope. I have also experienced this with my older Outback I had. No LSD in the rear and therefore stuck very easily.

If you know what your doing a Prado can pretty much do anything. I have been accused of using lockers on the 2003 version climbing a deeply rutted hill but without any such aids. Prado is a great 4x4 in the right hands.

18psi, but truth was I couldn't get their trucks up. In a straight line they just buried. Try to run along the beach and turn was useless. They just plough ahead and came to a stop.

The Foz just went up, down, up, down. It was ridiculous.

I saw a Ford Everest while I was out and about today and it was such an unusual occurence that it got me wondering how the Prado killer was selling. I had a look at Vfacts, April, May Prado topped the class sales and was beaten by the Holden Captiva??? in June. No sign of the Prado killer anywhere

I was really keen on the Everest as I watched its development over several years but I was extremely disappointed in the old fashioned 5 cylinder diesel motor that Volvo had already said goodbye to. On test driving, I felt it was an extremely under powered vehicle for its weight and that the Falcon 4 litre six cylinder turbo motor would have been a great option. You don't see many of them on the road whereas every second 4 wheel drive is a Prado so I guess numbers speak for themselves.

Every other 4wd is a patrol, ranger, or bt50, prado or land cruiser in my area :-)

It can't be a bad car, but I'm impressed with how few there are on the road at the moment. Why is that?

Prado has been sold since the 90's, patrol since the 60's(?), Everest for 1-2 years?

True but by comparison the update Prado is almost 3 years old and they are everywhere. I have seen at least 1 Everest

Ive seen dozens floating about. I even saw one that had recently taken a trip to ARB - fully decked out. They look smashing with all the aftermarket gear attached.
I think the problem is, they were marketed as comparable to the prado...but they arent really - not the same size, dont have the same capabilities etc. I think those who have test driven with high expectations may have been let down.

Test drove Everest a few times before buying a Prado. On the test drive factors:-
Better than Prado on: Boot design, a but more performance, handling, style, fancier dashboard
Prado better on: quality, smoothness of city driving, comfort
Then add in expected reliability, less depreciation, longer range and dealer quality - the Prado won.
