Does the manual have low range? I thought it was only the auto that had the 8speed?

Yeah, I think you are right. I have only driven a manual once and that was a long time ago. One of our customers has an auto and his only complaint is towing his trailers around his property the auto occasionally overheats. Something his old Hilux never did because he used low range.

The amarok is too low also. Have a mate with one and he has to hit everything flat out so to not get stuck on the beach

              Yeah it looks that way:

              Amarok - 192mm
              Prado 150 - 220mm
              Everest - 225mm

When you look at the effort people expend to and extra 40-50mm in a Prado that extra 28 mm is gold

Yep. Those measurements are probably from the lowest point underneath, but it's also the side sills/steps. Next to my 150 it looks like a 2WD.

This aside, my mate does still like his amarok.

On a recent 4 wheel drive trip, the three Prados conquered everything with ease but the Amorok got stuck once and lost its tyres as well.

Hills that my Prado ate for breakfast stopped the Amorok in its tracks and it had to keep rolling down the hill as the wheels kept losing traction.

                    Very amusing!

Might be the driver because 4x4 monthly placed it in front of the new Hilux purely because not only did it conquer the hill climb ruts with ease, other than the Prado it was the only car to head off the bitumen and up the hill without touching a button.

The Hilux obviously had to engage 4WD, the Prado did it fairly easy in H4 open diff, and ate it for breakfast in L4.

Also the Amarok was equal to Ranger for having both diff lock and traction control working in tandom.

This was the auto, and 1st gear is the same final drive as L4 1st due to the fact the 8-speed never uses 1st unless the electrics are in off-road mode.

i have noticed on a few soft beach trips that the amarok rear diff is very big a low also, i was following a few and it was pushing a lot of sand.

Unless the tyres are smaller than 31" it should be the same as the Prado.

Regardless if I could pedal my wife's forester from Fraser to Moreton Island and to DI with a camper without any issues I am pretty sure the Amarok will do it easy.

Drivers often make cars look bad.

Haha You had a Forester on Fraser and Moreton towing? It must've rained just prior or during your trips if you did the inland tracks towing in a Forester. You could drive the firm beaches ok no probs but not most of the inland tracks in warmer weather if it hadn't rained in ages and the sand was dry and boggy in sections. Moreton Island's main east-west track would catch out a Forester in quite a few sections towing. On both islands you'd be constantly steering the car onto the higher ridges of the track in slightly softer sections. If the tracks were dry and boggy realistically how many times did you smack the sump on a sand hump just from going a wee bit too fast to prevent yourself from getting snagged. Don't get snatched backwards in soft sand either or you'll rip the plastic guard under the sump clean off. Soft roader plastic guards =$300.

Let me stop you right there before you make an arse of yourself old man. Who said anything about plastic? Cast alloy bash plate! Google it.

There is a reason my Prado has UVP plates, this isn't my first rodeo.

Oh did I mention I did with 17" low profile tyres? Too easy.

Don't tell my uncle his old ass outback can't handle soft sand... https://goo.gl/photos/koxjpQ1vFNLiWPa17

This will annoy you, no clutch, no shocks, no ground clearance and no power yet made it to champagne pools (this was the same ramp an NT Pajero got bogged twice trying to climb)

You have no idea how good a rally car is on sand. So when I say drivers make or break a cars ability, you better believe it.

Four wheels turning is four wheels turning, get them stuck? It's on you.

Ahh that explains it perfectly then. An eastern beach trip with the speed gaining run ups leading to bypass tracks with conditions that were pretty favourable. I'm genuinely impressed that the subie has an alloy guard... I'm not a fan of Subaru's myself but am genuinely impressed they've been thoughtful enough to fit them to their cars. Well done . But a stock Suburu Forester is hardly a rally car haha. As much a rally car as a stock Mitsubishi Lancer maybe? I know what you mean about driving ability. Pajero's would be the number one privately owned 4wd that I've seen bogged in sand over the years more than any other. I just put it down to the fact that since the mid 2,000's they're favourably bought as towing vehicles and when some of those owners take them 4wding they may not fully know what to do and this includes such basic things as tyre pressures and knowing when to stop accelerating when initially getting stuck. The beginners guide "Super Select" 4wd system with beginners level instructions on what gear to select for what terrain is testament to that.

Next challenge for you in the mighty bullet proof Subaru can be the Byfield State Forest destination Five Rocks campground? Softest sand I've ever driven on. The kioske attendant told me to forget what I knew of tyres pressures with Fraser Island and go down to 10psi, sometimes lower depending on how hot it is for the long uphill section heading in and he wasn't kidding. I saw a few cars over a few days give up after a couple of hours trying, turn around and leave.
