  • Radio interference, led spotlights

The 120 I bought a couple of months ago came with rather poor radio reception, has had a new head unit installed at some stage, and finally got around to improve it today. Presumed it was due to the tint so bought an aftermarket aerial and mounted it to the bullbar. Reception is now somewhat improved but still not quite as good as my old 90 series. Not the best reception out where I live at the best of times so I can live with that. The problem that was also there before and still remains is whenever the spotlights are on (big red led) the static is so bad that you can't hear anything else. All works perfectly when just high beam is on. When playing cd it gets no interference from the spotties. Is there some sort of rfi filter that can be fitted to the spotty circuit that will eliminate the interference?

It depends on how the interference is getting into the radio, it maybe radiating
of the power cables or from the the equipment, I assume if the cases of the lights
are grounded and you have the antenna as far as possible from the lights, you
could try passing the power cables through some ferrite beads and see if that helps.
Position the beads as close as possible to the lights on the power leads, if they have a
seperate power supply then near the power supply.

Just went out and moved it well clear of the spotties but alas no difference. In regard to the ferrite beads, are there different types/sizes for different applications? Also came across this http://www.ryda.com.au/aerpro-ap308-...a-noise-filter while trying to find an answer. Has anyone got any experience with them in this situation?

Hi, it sounds like you're experiencing electromagnetic interference from the LED's.

Cheaper brands, like the ones you see on eBay and the like have cheap components and minimal shielding.

Update...I have spoken to the guys at Big Red and tried a variety of things to remove the problem unsuccessfully. However, they have now offered (without me putting any pressure on), to replace the spotlights free of charge even though I am not the original owner and also have no proof of purchase date. Many thanks to Shane the tech guy.
Now if only Toyota themselves could learn from this and apply an equal level of customer service to their cracked dash issue we would all be much happier!

Did replacing the lights solve it? What model were they?

Haven't yet received them as they were out of stock at the time. They were dispatched yesterday morning so should be here Monday. Will update as soon as I get a chance to fit them which probably won't be until the weekend after at best. Model no BR9000. Here's a link.... http://www.bigredled.com.au/LED_driving_light.html

Update time. Have received and fitted the new spotlights this morning. Problem solved. A HUGE thank you to Shane at Brown and Watson International who as stated earlier was extremely helpful from first contact right thru to a successful fix at no cost to me.

It seems I was a bit quick to claim success with this problem as when I went for a drive and proudly turned on the spotties to impress the missus with my prowess, white noise again, bugger. Turns out it removed the problem only if the engine wasn't running so not all that useful after all. Fast forward to this morning and I have fitted a AA-3074 noise filter that cost about $15 from jaycar and it is now perfect. Fitted the filter on the outlet side of the relay for the spots (pin 87). Also tried fitting it on the power supply side (pin 33) and while it did reduce most interference there was still some present.
