  • Water Pump replacment

    I had to change my water pump today. I searched this site as it is usually a wealth of knowledge. Today however I couldnt find what I needed

    I found a couple of ok threads that had some info but found an excellent thread here

    found this very helpful so thought I would post it here for the next guy who needs help as I did.

    If there is a thread here that I couldn't find let me know.

    P.S Cant believe how much of my car I had to remove to replace the pump. I understand now why they say to do timing belt at the same time.

    Most models you can easily change water pump, nothing to do with timing belt.
    Some however are a 1 piece unit & all that extra work needs to be done.
    Silly really, once done its all good you never have to do it again with the 2 separate piece arrangement.

      I have all the history of this car and the water pump was changed at 96k (but not T Belt that was done as per schedule at 150K) then I changed it yesterday at 228k from what I see from others on this site that's about right (change every 100k). As the belt didn't need to be changed for another 80k I didn't change it. Why? Well I figure It will be nearly time to change the water pump again in about 80k so will do both at 300k when I change T Belt.
      One thing though, I did get a engine check light come up after I put it all back together. I have plugged it into laptop yet to see the code. Is there a water flow sensor somewhere that would set off the engine light?

        I replaced my pump at 160K and I reckon I could have left it in there for another 40 or 50K, there was no leak and the bearing felt fine. Accessory belt done at same time.

        No water flow sensor and basically the only plug you would have unplugged is the one to the left of the timing belt cover (as you look at it).

          Are you talking about the white one in pic?? I think that one is the temp gauge??? Anyway I didn't unplug that one.

          I did remove the intercooler as I couldn't undo the top timing gear. I was led to believe that you need to remove the rocker cover and stick a spanner on the cam to stop it turning. I started pulling it all apart after i got the cover over the tappet cover off I said stuff that and put it all back on so maybe I forgot to put a plug back on. I'll have a look after work.
          I have the laptop and cable thing that I got of Ebay that I havent used yet. I will have to install the software and see what code I get.

            Yes, that one. There isn't any need to jam the cam for replacing the timing belt. Once the tensioner is removed the belt simply comes off. And all the water pumps can be accessed without pulling the timing cover off. Remove the fan assembly to get better access at those bolts.

              To take water pump housing off you have to remove the timing belt backing plate to get to the 2 bolts under it. So you need to remove top timing gear and tensioner. There are also 2 bolts under the aircon mounting bracket meaning you have to remove alternator and aircon to get to them.
              Found I had left a plug of the Intercooler when I put that back on. All good now.

                I only replaced the outer pump as there was nothing at all wrong with the inner piece. I see where you had the trouble now.

                  It was really badly leaking and i couldn't see where from. I wasn't going to do all that work to find out it was the housing leaking then have to do it all again It wasn't a hard job, just a big job. A lot of work for something that should be as easy as removing fan belt unbolting water pump. reverse previous steps.
                  I guess gone are those days. Oh well I guess me and the car had a couple of hours bonding time
