  • Uses Car Warranty Schemes? Worth the paper?

    Hi All,

I had some trouble with my new (old) 2012 Prado. Either way it was covered by the statutory warranty. It has caused me to reconsider getting a warranty with the car. I have been quoted $1695 for a three year plan B warranty with the National Warranty Company So I did some research before making the final buy decision and found this:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1785057
    and this
    http://consumeraction.org.au/consume...ranty-company/
    along with this
    http://www.smh.com.au/national/exten...13-giy88n.html

It is making me reconsider the purchase, as this is my first real car, can anyone offer their experience and insight on this?

The only problem with those "statutory" warranties is that you have to fight Goliath in the small claims/consumer protection court. It can be drawn out and few have any real success, especially when your car sits idle and broken for weeks/months whilst the fight goes on.

With a purchased additional warranty you have to read the fine print and see what is actually covered. Consumables, which include batteries, injectors, pads, shocks, tyres are not covered.

My son just bought a second hand Aurion from a Toyota dealer which has the balance of new car warranty for 1 year. After that he purchased an extended warranty which added a few extra dollars per month to his loan. As he isn't too cluey when it comes to cars and mechanicals it was probably the best for him and also means he won't be annoying me to fix his problems. The only caveat on his warranty was that he has to have the car serviced by the dealer.

I purchased extended warranty when I bought my Prado new. Just as well because shortly after the factory warranty expired the engine blew up and cost $12 to fix. A bargain considered I paid $1800 for the warranty.

I had an extended warranty for my golf gti. Took it in for a service in belconnen vw and the service manager tried telling me my dsg was on the fritz because of its stuttering at low speed (which is just gears 1&2 shift programming for the dsg tranny when you hover around a certain speed - it doesn't know which gear to be in). $4-5000 repair cost. Car was 6 months out of factory warranty. I knew this wasn't an actual issue, but something he made up or wasn't sure of. The issue with the dsg's wasn't an issue with warning - they just stopped working.

I said "great, I thought it might be a ticking time bomb so I got an extended warranty with you when I bought the car, when can you replace it?". He said hed call me when he could slot me in, but he never did, as expected.

Meh. I don't get my car serviced at dealers any more for that reason.

I purchased a 3 year extended warranty for around $1500 when I bought my 120 second hand years back. The insurance was through Swann from the Toyota dealer.

In the time I had the car, replaced the water pump and engine mounts through regular Toyota servicing..all covered except for consumables. Just before the warranty ran out, the engine went. That cost 18k to fix (included new injectors, rails, rebuilt fuel pump etc) and I was only slightly out of pocket...so I say well worth it! When talking to my mechanic would dealt with Swann for this claim, it was down to the service history of the car being spot on. They asked a few questions about the car to make sure it was not abused or chipped, wanted a copy of the service book but ok'd the claim within only a few days.

Yeah but the warranty you are talking about and the warranty perthprado24 is talking about are two completely different things.

The one you got was an extened Toyota factory warranty - these are the ones to go for as they pretty much cover anything at any cost regardless, as a factory warranty normally does.

The one he is talking about is from the National Warranty Company - they arent worth the paper they are written on.
They have so many hidden clauses & restrictions in them that its not funny.
Often they will have stipulations that the car has to be serviced soley by the dealer that the warranty was purchased through, and any & all work MUST be carried out by the same dealer.
Meaning that if you are travelling over the other side of the country and something happens, even if you pay out of your own pocket to fix the issue at another mechanic, if something else happens later on down the track they can pretty much tear up the warranty as the vehicle had been touched by another mechanic.

And then, even if you do follow everything to the letter of the law, they usually only cover up to x amount, and even then will try to move heaven and earth to get out of paying for the work.

They are absolute rubbish & shouldnt even be allowed to be sold to consumers.

Probably different ones. I bought my car and it was 4 years old, outside of factory warranty. The 3 year warranty was through a third party, Swann Insurance. I guess it is just dependant on how good the third party insurer is.

Im about to head out of the Toyota warranty and was wondering the same thing....the thing that concerns me is the 'must have it serviced by the dealers etc' thing. Im planning on doing my own servicing (far superior as i actually give a sh1t about the car im servicing) and keeping the thing for the next ten years.

Now im pretty cluey when it comes to fixing cars and can do most things including engine work ...its just that in the past i never had the space or time to do major jobs...but seeing as once out of warranty i want to mod the hell out of my prado, plus its not the daily drive as i cycle to work but a weekend car, finally im just in the process of building myself a pretty speccy workshop i think ill just spend the money on a decent vehicle lift instead....and fight for stat warranty if it ever came to that...
2013 (12 build) GX Auto.......with safari snorkel, toyota bar, tow bar, roof racks, led spots with fancy newpro switchgear, uniden remote UHF and aerial, ARB bash plates, Roadsafe recovery points, digoptions radio, general grabber AT2s, cheap ebay roof rack that has stood up surprisingly well.....

                    Yeah, sorry I mis-read that.
                    Swann sounds like the go.
We always used to shudder when customers bought their cars into our workshop with a National Warranty Company Warranty - you almost always used to be sure that we would cop abuse from the customers because National Warranty would either only cover a smidge of the cost or no cost at all.

In the end we ended up making a rule that we would give the customers the quotes & let them deal personally with National Warranty Co and come back to us when they got approval for whatever they would cover.
