A slotted rotor wipes the brake pads of any contaminants and makes it perform better.

All Prado rotors are vented but some have different vent patterns. Here's the latest trend: Kangaroo paw vs straight.

How many kangaroos had to be killed to make those? Are 'roo shooters now taking the paws and on-selling them to DBA?

          The Prado's have 8 pads. 4 front, 4 rear.

You should check to see if he only replaced 4 or all 8...

Yeah. Should have said all four discs (8 pads). They work well. Had to stand on them at about 120k on dual carriageway when a B Double pulled straight out in front of me. He was doing 110. Missus is still complaining about her neck.

Up for my 48 month service this month. Have extended warranty so will be getting it done at my local Toyota dealer. Had the $220 service fees for first 3 years but no longer. This service is going to cost $1043.
At last service 6 months ago, pads were at 5mm all round so asked for quote on replacing pads on all 4 wheels. Toyota price is $375. From what I've seen on here that doesn't seem too bad.
              Any comments guys?

I replaced all my rotors with new DBA 4000 series rotors and Bendix 4WD pads all 'round for under $800. The OP is getting taken for a ride.

Reminds me of the receipts I found in my wife's car for works done on her brakes before I met her, they replaced the rotors with new ones AND charged her for rotor machining.... WTF!!!

                  Cheers Brad

I think all prado pads have what I call warning gweekers built in. They are small spring steel bits on the pads that drag on the disc and well gweek when there is about 3-4 mm of pad left. Gweek = high pitched squeak. I changed the front pads on my 2004 1KZTE last week and both the old and new pads had them. I got Bendix pads from Suprcheap for I think it was $60.

                    Cheers,

                    Owen

Just had the car in for the 60k service and Toyota advised I only had 4mm of pad left. Toyota said that at about 2mm the squealing will start and you should consider replacing them.

& about the same on eBay.
You can buy cheaper off eBay than trade price. I buy where I can obtain good easy service.
Another set I did yesterday, pretty well worn.

When it comes to brakes, sometimes it worth paying a little more so an experienced person can see what's going on.
Another set of rears I did earlier in the week had a slide contaminated, rust.
It needed a clean up & re lube.
See the pads unevenly worn, this is a tight slide.

From my experience in the past pre 2012, a few Brisbane Northside mechanics will charge $1,000-$1,100 for all 4 brakes to be replaced with new rotors fitted as well. But if they just replaced the pads and charged $1,200 then you got taken to the cleaners in a major way and I'd be filthy about that. You should learn how to replace brake pads yourself to save yourself a decent hit on the wallet every couple of years. It's unbelievably easy to do and doesn't take long. Rotor changes are simple too. Just a few extra little things need to be done with the rear rotors as the hand brake cable usually needs to be backed off a little in order to get the rear rotors off. Learning to bleed the brake lines correctly can come later or you can just continue to keep paying a mechanic to do that for you every few years. Learn little bits at a time and 5yrs later you'll know your way around a car enough to do all the basics and save a lot of money over the years to buy yourself plenty of nice tools.

I was doing my own lube & filter changes on previous cars of mine, but many moons ago I was charged $340 for an oil, oil filter and air filter change on myPrado when I first bought it in 2007. The mongrels had the hide to charge $30 labour to fit the air filter which seriously takes about 40 seconds to replace. They showed the cost breakdown on the receipt. Last f'n time I paid thieves to work on my car. Learned a hell of a lot since then.

But a little helpful tip... There's some brilliant independent mobile mechanics out there who charge as little $70 an hr labour. You could just buy the parts req and get them to do the work. Phone around and ask for an hourly rate and built a rapport with one you like. Plus you stay at home while they do work on your car instead of you having to organise a lift from the mechanics, then another lift to go and pick your car up following the typical phone call from them telling you your car is ready 15 minutes before they close for the day.
