  • FOX Shocks!!!! The Custom made 2,5" with DSC adjuster kind

So Apparently I have been a very good boy this year and Santa decided to make an early x-mas delivery just 30 minutes ago :-). That and probably wanted to make up for the crappy experience with the current gear installed on the Prado :-)

    Hey zero,

Nice work! I've been a very good boy and there's no box like that outside my place dammit!

What closed-open lengths did you end up going for??

A few Fox vs. Standard pics.

          Measurements for rears.

          Rear. Open. Closed.
          Toyo. 570mm. 362mm
          Fox. 634mm. 413mm

          Front. Open. Closed.
Toyo. 555mm. ?? - Cant be bothered taking them apart
          Fox. 572mm. ?? - Same as above...

The Front's are basically catalog items that you can see on the Fox site.... The rears however they only advertise as suitable for up to 1.5" lift so I had them knock up a custom set with the above measurements and supply Prado specific bushes.

            Hey,

Just a few considerations/things you may run into for your rear setup...

Closed length of 413mm on the rear shock is roughly 10mm longer than axle-bumpstop bind at around 405mm, so are you going to space your bumpstops down?

...also, the open length of 634mm is beyond the swaybar bind at around 615mm, and you'll need at least 20mm longer links if you keep your rear swaybar in. Are you running a rear swaybar and are you already running longer links?

...the large 2.5" diameter on the rear shocks means they may bind on the axle housing at full droop, not sure at what open length, but maybe after 634mm??

Hi Mark.. Great advice Many thanks mate!

I have already sorted the extended sway bar links so I'll just work out the bumpstop spacers and do that aswell.

              Cheers

Got the rear done last night and very happy with the feel of the ride coming into work this morning - way way way smother on the freeway through the dips on the road etc at high speed and soaking up speed bumps with a much smoother motion rather than that jarring feeling I'd get in my back with the bilstiens both on hitting the bump and down the other side....

There are supplied brackets to mount the reservoirs on the chassis just behind the rear wheel (you can see the bracket in the first pic installed) however I opted to mount them to the shock body for the time being due to concerns about clearance to the 285 tyre...

On a side note - Note the completely screwed "Top of the Line Developed specifically for this car and Aus conditions" rear drivers side shock.... Buggered after only 9 or so months and one 4x4 trip....

                    Hey,

It's not uncommon to see that kind of wear and tear on any shock on the rear, they cop a lot of stone strikes/sand blasting etc. in the position they're in. Same for the lower trailing arm mounts.

As your FOX shocks are an upside down configuration compared to your Bilsteins, it means the shaft is now exposed to those same stone strikes and sand blasting, so I would be putting a protective boot over there asap! Just the slightest nick in the shaft and you will have leaking shocks in no time!

Huh, well there you go -I didnt realise fox made shocks for cars.
If they are anything like bike shocks, they will be awesome!

OK - So got the fronts in and looks the business - quick drive round the hood and as with the rear, now just plush as, soaking up small and big bumps super smooth....

Only one problem :-(. Have had to remove the swaybar cause the ends of it will touch the coils when moving up and down.... Obviously dont want to leave it like this cause the car feels more like a boat to drive without it...

Only need about an extra 10mm of width each side so not much...

Question... Is get each end of the swaybar bent out by about 10mm doable??? Or is that something thats not really done for some reason??

                            Hey zero,

You can get relocation plates for the front swaybar, no need to bend anything!

                            https://www.superiorengineering.com....438?filter=241

It's a common problem for that gap to close up, particularly with 2.5" struts!

Hi Mark - Actually got a set of those and the fox shocks actually came with a set as well :-). Thing is i fitted them and it still wasnt right... Car was in the air though... I'll try fit it again in the morning with the car on the ground and see but not holding my breath... The other problem I have with my prado that others dont seem to is that when I fit those spacers then the centre (more one side) of the swaybar fouls against one of those braces that bridge the two chassis cross members
