Have a look online for a local mechanic that does trailer regos. They need a weighbridge to do it. I used one local to me. I just gave them a call, came to an agreement for a cash payment to use their weighbridge. Job done.

Saved me a 20 minute trip to my nearest public one.

I guess it tasted O.K. If I was checked, I would have dumped some water to drop the weight.

I weighed the van with all the crap the missus likes to take, plus full water tanks, and was over by more than 100kg. So I put the van on a diet and dropped some water, to bring it back to 'just right'.

My single axle van sits perfectly level, so I don't stick out like some that have the A-frame sitting just off the road.

This is a very good thread Kaindog.
Like you, we see a large number of Prado and caravan combinations that must be way over the limits.
Your weigh bridge weights are very helpful in relation to our weights. We haven't gone over the bridge but keep tabs on what goes in.

Fortunately, no kids saves us about 80kg, I'm about 10kg lighter, no drawers (yet), no rack and an alloy bar will bring me under your value - enough to put some tools in and fill the fridge. The portable solar panel goes in as well.
The kerb weight already has 80kg of fuel and oil added so that takes care of your body weight anyway.

Our ball weight on 16' single axle is 190kg.

We are very careful with what we put in the van as well. The 400kg payload disappears very quickly with camp chairs, 40kg of gas, 120kg water, picnic tables, blankets, clothing, food, the outside drinks fridge topped up and sundry incidentals. There's a second 100A battery added too.

Thanks again for timely reminder as we head into Xmas break.

I agree our WA water is ok but a lot don't realise that after you leave Penong in SA no water till Norseman in WA.
The road houses have water for their own use and showers, and I wouldn't drink from the tanks at the 24 hour stops, seen dead birds on the roof.
I always carry water across the Nullarbor but stop at Eucla or Caiguna for the night and a shower

I guarantee that every single 4WD doing trips to Central Australia, Cape York etc with at least two people on board is technically illegal and overweight.

                Wow! That's a big call.

On my trips to Central Australia and up to Darwin I carry two people and about 200 kg in the Prado and the camper and contents are a bit over 1000kg.

Yes, I am overweight. I could loose 20kg but how does that make me technically illegal.

I also average under 10.5 Lt/100k and I do have a kitchen sink.

I wouldn't be so sure "every single 4wd" is overweight...in fact we tow a camper specifically designed (fully laden) to top the scales at 700kg, 2 people in the car, water and fuel etc under the roof rack maximum weight, and car fridge, etc...and we toured the Simpson, down to Innaminka, up to Congee Lakes, and so on...always below max weight limits

However, I agree that some rigs are definitely overweight, and on one trip the inspectors were weighing cars and caravans etc, doing a roadside check..with a few people emptying water tanks etc beside the road in an attempt to come underweight.

That's why I filled up before starting across the Nullarbor, even though it would put me just over the maximum weight in the van. You can dump water at an inspection station if needed to come under weight, but you cannot fill up with water if there is none about.

Jumped on the weighbridge today, GXL 150 2.8L. 2 kids (10 + 11), 1 dog (Staffy), weekend bags to holiday house, my hand and cordless tools, 1 drifta draw with recovery stuff, winch and bar, dual batts. 2920KGs. 2920 KGs!!!!!,lucky wife didnt come!! I even have the Rhino roof rack off atm....
This is how all my cars have lived with this gear in it. No way did I even contemplate it being close, I thought I would have had 300-400kgs left to play with. No I am not fat, I weigh 74 kgs! I am absolutely shocked that this is it, no more!!

Might be worth trying another weighbridge just to be safe. Could be an error in the calibration.

I have been told that the weighbridge on the Hume just passed the Broadford exit is now automatic and free.

                            Has anyone used it?

I had an interesting phone call from the fella who bought my old 80 series. He wanted to know who did the suspension up on it as he wanted to ask them if the ball weight had been revised or something like that. He went to say he had been told that if you get your suspension modified, you can have your towing capacities changed (upgraded). This doesn't sound right to me, surely there is more required. Can anyone provide further comment?
