Have you towed using this vehicle? How many km's have you got on the odo? Sounds like the gearbox might be failing.

Definitely needs a trans fluid flush. Then see if it improves the situation.

          Hey,

You can and should change the gear box oil. Toyota says it is a "sealed unit" that doesn't need servicing over the lifetime of the car, but don't buy it!

I change my a/t fluid after a long trip or if I've been towing for long periods, and I've done it at least 4 times in 147,000km, and I can tell you every time I've changed it, the old fluid has a very slight burnt smell to it.

If you haven't changed it and your Prado has 288,000km on it, I would get it changed asap!

Any decent mechanic can do this flush.

Make sure you get the mechanic to save the old fluid, and have a smell of it!

          Good luck with it!

Local auto transmission specialist has quoted me $400 to do a full flush. Not sure if that good or not but its cheaper than a new box! My D4D has done 120,000 and he recommended it.
