  • Long term storage

    Hi all,

I've recently found out that I'm heading overseas for 2 and a half years. I have a 2012 Prado 150.

I'm planning to store it in a shed around the Canberra area. I don't have any immediate family or friends close that will be able to run it up on a regular basis.

    Any advice for the following?

    1. Servicing prior to storage.

    2. Car stands (brand, location)

    3. Fuel

    4. Batteries

    5. Periodic running (any adverse long term effects for not doing this?)

    6. Servicing on return

You could give it to me? I'll make sure it's used regularly...

To be helpful. I know for long term storage most tips include draining fuel and putting an additive in the tank to prevent rust. Removing or disconnecting battery - OR putting on a trickle charger. Either put car on stands or have it regularly moved to prevent damage to tyres

Have you thought of shipping the vehicle overseas with you? Im not sure of the cost of this, and how it compares to storage...
It may not be an option of course...

Maybe there's a business venture here - long term car storage...where the business stores, runs and generally looks after the car in your absence for a nominal fee...

There are specialist storage facilities for just such occasions.

I did a google search and this one was the first to pop up.

If the car is "nothing special" it is going to continue to depreciate and it may just be easier and or cheaper to flog it and buy again when you get back.

Probably best to sell it and buy another one later. The depreciation and storage fees would be pretty costly (unless money is no object and there's sentimental value in the Prado or fully loaded with accessories).

Don't forget rego and insurance costs are also wasted money. I agree with AMTS - sell it whilst it is worth something.

Yep sell it. 2.5 years is too long.

Yeah, rip all your gear off it and sell it.
Chuck the money in an interest bearing account for the 2 years and then buy something newer when you get home!

I love my Prado, but its no classic Monaro, there are plenty of them around.

Gee, their prices are quite reasonable really - especially if you had something rare that you didn't want to part with.

I was thinking the same, I would sell it.

Thanks for the comments all! I have put too much time into the car and we are happy with it, so storage it is. We are heading to the US so a RHS vehicle could be problematic to say the least. Organised storage is very $$$. We have appropriate insurance on our shed to let the rego & insurance lapse while still covering the vehicle which will save us money. Thanks for the tips on fuel additive, batteries and stands. Any more specifics on stands, or anything pest control tips?

Are the tyres the original ones from 2012? If so, probably won't need to put it on stands as you would need to change the tyres by the time you get back.

Perhaps pull the accessories off and sell the Prado as close to standard spec. Then put back the accessories when you return. This way, you won't need to rent such a large storage space and you won't have the possibility of mice chewing through your wiring (which is very expensive to replace).

Cheers amts. I'm unsure how I'm not getting this across. I've already decided not to sell. Not selling! The two and a half years is maximum time away, it could be 18 months!

I've replaced the tyres last November with Cooper AT3s, have done about 10,000km on them now. So still looking for stands.

We own the place where we are storing so no rent!
