I have a 2002 Prado Grande, I would like to upgrade my existing tyres, 265/70R16 Varies brands, to something more suited to a trip back to Cape York.

You cant go wrong with a set of Cooper AT3's. Great tyre both on and off the road. LT tyre so puncture resistant and good for 90,000km. Quiet on road and doesn't effect fuel consumption.

I have recently put on a set of 265/70/17 Cooper ST Maxx (on a 120). They have done a two week trip thru NW Flinders (lots of very rough station tracks etc) plus there and back from Sydney. I am very impressed.
Not too noisy (just a low rumble on the hi-way) but great grip and good float on creek sand at low pressures. Good up those rock hill climbs (Mt Gill on Warraweena Station)
For you it means going up to 265/75/16 if you are happy to live with the extra bit of clearance. A bit pricy but excelent, and no punctures!

Checkout some Hankook MT's.......not an over the top rude tread pattern just an aggressive At and they are priced well and seem to be good thing from all accounts.

Everyone has their 'favourite' tyres and I am not sure how you make up your own mind. I have just been through the task after being a bit disappointed with the 46,000 kms I only got out of my Goodyear Wrangler A/Ts which I payed $300 each for 2 years ago. Decided on Toyo All Country A/T IIs from Tyrepower for $280 each fitted with a free check of the wheel alignment after 5000 kms and they will rotate for free every 20,000 kms. I rotate every 10,000 but will take them up on the offer every second time. These are 265/65/R17 BTW.

These tyres are highly recommended by SOME.

+1 for the Cooper ST max. I took ST's to the cape and was very glad for the more agressive tread pattern whan going down a few muddy slopes - eg the Pascoe. I would go an All terrain tyre for the cape. The ST max are not too noisy IMO

We also went with the Toyo's but only paid $210 ea in Sydney - not sure why they were so much cheaper. Same size - 265/65/R17. They've been ok with around 8000kms on them so far.

A/T IIs. I'm not sure why the price was so low - this guy also quoted me a lower price than everyone else for Cooper tyres too.

Thanks for the tips, I have been looking at the Maxxis AT 980's and they seem to be the pick at the moment. I like the 10 ply wall and the price is just a bit better than the Micky's.

But will look at some of the suggestions above a bit more closely, thanks again.
