  • Chip & Exhaust - Prado 120 D4D

    Hi, I'm looking for some advice, it's time to put a chip and exhaust system onto my 120. With so many manufacturers out there, I'm after some guidance. Some advice I have had is to not touch Roo Systems and a few others...

    Any help will be appreciated. Cheers

            I have a Beaudesert 2 3/4" exhaust. Very good note a free flowing. Just saving up for the Steinbeaure chip. The chip is possibly the best around (having read numerous articles for the last 5 years).

              I am a very satisfied user of the Steinbauer chip on 08 D4D GXL. I also had 3inch redback extreme exhaust before the Steinbauer. There was an earlier version of the Steinbauer (for Prado/Hilux) that did not like being paired with 3inch exhaust (it tripped default Toyota settings resulting in engine light coming on and engine automatically going into limp mode - I did experience this) however this has been addressed and it should NOT be viewed as a criticism of Steinbauer. I was able to work through the issue with good customer service from Steinbauer and the result was that I moved to a newer version of the Steinbauer. This was a 2-3yrs ago now - not a single issue since. The original version I had also did not activate when on cruise control due to it being linked with actual throttle sensor but the newer version addresses this as well.

                I have attached a couple of links below.

                Not saying that all motors will fail with / without chips. Our motor was chipped at 40000, injectors replaced at 150000 and holed a piston at 200000 when in the middle of Kakadu, 250km NE of Katherine.
                Brothers motor chipped from new 88000km and holed a piston 350km west of Katherine.

                Seems like Katherine is a bogie town for us.

                The chip will give you more power and torque and make for easier towing. It is the long distance of this that will be downfall. The injectors on the D4D, being a service item need to be replaced from time to time. Usually at 120000 or when the feedback values are excessive. The chip increases rail fuel pressure and causes the injector to fail earlier or when failing injects too much fuel and melts the piston.

                Have a read and make your decision. I am happy for you to come over and i can show you the holed piston and how to run the techstream software to check the injector values.

                There are other ways to help with towing such as torque converter lock over ride.

                  The Steinbauer doesn't increase rail pressure which is what kills injectors. Rail pressure chips cause the engine to make a huge racket when cold.

                  Incidentally ECU remap will be available for 3l D4D as of next week as software has been released

                    Here in NZ we have an outfit called ECU chips who sell German designed chips that can be programmed via their software. They make a heap of adjustments during the tune to ensure stuff like AFR is stable around 18:1 under load and leveling out around 20:1. Also tuning and testing EGT. They up the boost to between 18 and 20psi on factory 1kd turbos but keep an eye on all their adjustments. Google them if you like because I'm sure they have contacts in Oz land.
