  • Well I finally cleaned the EGR and bypassed it fully along with installing the manual mapper and also bypassed the PVC so the breather does not go into the intake.

          • so far i have done a few trips (as this car isnt my daily drive )

1st one was Adelaide to Sydney & return with just the vehicle only
no codes no issues ( every now & then a slight hesitation on off throttle)
            10.1L / 100 doing the 100/110km/h

2nd was Adelaide to Gympie just the car , same 10.1L/100
            returned with a 18ft poptop 1.5T 13.5L to 15L/100 (was bloody hot )

3rd was Adelaide to Perth just the car same 10.1L/100
return was with another 18ft poptop 1.7T slightly taller in the worst head wind i have seen for quite a while 16.5L to 17.5L/100
did have 1 code ( went to limp mode) P1251
took 3 goes to clear it

now about to send the test unit back for the new one

1251, the kind of code you might want to know about?
When turbocharger boost pressure is higher than boost pressure for a short time in which there was possibility of engine damage.
              (1 trip detection logic)
              Due to full blank

              Thank you for feedback.

no mate just been looking for one for ourselves , the first one from QLD was pretty good, but was in Gawler getting the rego done and this fella said it was a really nice van and asked me what's it worth i added $3K to what i paid for it and he said would you take cash for it , of coarse i did !!

the other one was a lucky find in WA while we were there on holidays

it was very hilly where it happened and i was letting the cruise do it's thing
i was watching the scan gauge on the boost and i didn't see anything out of the norm

                • Just a comment, but using cruise control when towing, especially in a hilly area, is not recommended by toyota, and despite not seeing anything out of the norm wrt boost may not mean that the engine was working pretty hard...it may not be surprising that it threw an error code, with or without a mapper perhaps...just a comment that's all
Keep testing, and pls keep reporting, it's all invaluable

                  • Hi,
I'm trying to correct some misconception due to inquiries.

There are fundamental difference between diesel and petrol engines.
The Diesel engine has no pre-mixed fuel or spark plug. Unlike turbo charged petrol engine, the diesel engine has no butterfly to shutoff the inlet to trap pre-mixed fuel to causes pinging or premature detonation of the fuel and damage the engine.

The diesel engine is purely air pumping device. Turbo charger will help to increase the air pressure so it can inject more fuel thus more power.
Sometimes you get over pressure warning from car computer that is to warn driver that you exceeded maximum allowable turbo charger pressure by keep pushing pedal or other heavy load combination which pushes engine to turn more then they can.

In over pressure condition car computer just simply reduces injecting any more fuel to lower the power and warn driver.
You can also see sometimes many "diesel chipped" engine brings the such warning light.

The idea of full blanking of EGR causes pressure warning or causing engine damage is for person who don't know the principle of diesel operation.

Remind you again, in diesel there is no such thing as pinging or pre-detonation to damage engine. If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal car computer will immediately stops injection of fuel and any over pressure air remaining in the inlet or cylinder will just simply dissipates through air pumping device which is cylinder, all it takes is to turn crankshaft once.

If you have 3 litre engine then it will dissipate 3 litres amount of pressurized air to exhaust that's all. The cylinders are simply working as boost releasing device without fuel being injected because there is no premixed fuel which will detonate with over pressure (pinging).
And if EGR valve is open at that time and pressure differential is lower at the exhaust port then whatever the remaining pressure will escape through EGR valve as well, but it is not designed to relief the pressure it is only incidental.

But it is rare that the pressure of exhaust port is lower than inlet except at idle.

I had many people who had over pressure warning light condition coming on time to time before they fit the Manual Mapper with full blanking.

Not to mention about thousands of Prado owners who permanently have blocked EGR with full blanking plate ignoring the MIL light for years without any ill effects.

I hope I have explained enough for people who concerned about full blanking.
I have done and seen many many people done that all over the world in different brand of diesel cars not just Toyota.
I know Toyota has some nice packages for what people want but let me tell you the engine design isn't very good one. There are many diesel engine which is far better design than Toyota.

The new Toyota diesel engine just released was promising but that they just got too much electronics which I don't like as a wild man in the bush.

                    Cheers

                          Hey Ozbush,

These sort of things happen here. Crazy stuff hey!
Mate it was good to share some knowledge & listen to you & Im sure we will do it again sometime in ozbush
                          All the best to you!

There you go, another very knowledgeable member lost.
If it was due to him offering a cheap product, which may help the members, I see management point, but it should have been discussed right?
Maybe it was? Who knows? Anyway........... Carry on as we were.

....I knew it was an accident, so lets hope we can get Ozbush back on the thread. very interesting, and its informative about some of the issues of EGR technology.

                              Larry,

                              Thanks for your thoughts.

Have done a tow test over Christmas (well our son did, he borrowed the car and camper) with mapper at 0%. Mix of towing and normal. Home to Amamoor, Gympie, Kingaroy then home.
15.1 L/100 which is about normal for that area, lots of hills and little flat country.
Even if no decrease in fuel usage happy the engine is no longer eating it's own poo.

Sue and i are taking a couple of days and camping back at Amamoor for the long weekend. Will run the mapper at +5% as the car changes gear at a lower rpm and holds gears for longer. We also have a T/C lock over ride so use that as well.

                              Rusty.
