  • 2015 2.8 litre Engine

Just picked up new prado with the new 2.8 litre engine. less than impressed at this point. The old 3.0l 'felt' like it had more pull. May also have something to do with the 6 speed auto. Just doesn't feel as luggy as the previous engine with the van on back. Any one else got any impressions. Thought for sure they would have gone a bigger diesel at least.

.... Just gone past 4000 k. Fuel economy pretty good, averaging 8.9 l / 100 km. Most trips > 75 km. This is my 4th Prado and this one still feels gutless compared to those previous, despite Toyotas claims of more power and torque. Must be hidden in there somewhere. Jury is still out.

Not driven one but on paper the 2.8 has more power than the old 3.0L.

Im really interested to know how the new 2.8 feels both in power and how refined it is.

What about the NVH or i mean how refined it feels compared to the old one? (Noise, Vibration, Harshness)
The 1KD-FTV feels really unrefined for such an expensive car. You can hear and feel lots of vibration and engine noise in the cabin for such an expensive car, they could have tried putting more insulation and even an engine cover to reduce the noise at least. (Just like the new one)

I've had the 2.8 for a couple of weeks. NVH much improved over the 3.0, that's probably these biggest improvement I can say so far, plus economy is a little better. I can't feel the power increase but I haven't towed the camper or motorbikes yet as I still haven't had a chance to put a bar on the back.

              I went from a 120 1KD to a 150 1GD so not a direct comparison I guess but so far.... very impressed.

It is much quieter, though I do miss the sound of the turbo as you just cannot hear it on the 1GD.

Power wise is hard to compare as the 150 is heaver, but towing my 1.5t van the 150 definately feels stronger and more settled at cruise speed (towing in S4 between 90-100).

The old 120 had OME kit and the new one is still on stock suspension (c'mon adelaide 4wd show!) so I think it will only tow better when I get the lift in...
              Cheers

Had mine for over a week now, whilst i haven't had any other prado, I can say it is very quiet. At 100 on the freeway its sitting just above 1500 rpm so I rekcon it will be pretty economical.

May I suggest those who want more comfortable NVH buy a Prius or a petrol. Lets be realistic, this a a 4wd DIESEL and so far all Nissan and Toyota have achieved while mucking around with the common rail catastrophe's are less reliable engines that promote petrol engines for longevity.

As someone who only got 76,000km from a 1KD, I would gladly take more Noise/Vibration/Harshness and have a reliable diesel that only needs a rebuild after the odometer reads 0 again.

Seriously? I'm sitting on 2100 rpm at 100km/h with my manual 2014. Suddenly I'm worried! haha

Meh, that's about what I'm sitting on in my manual too......
I bet the revs jump up when climbing a hill, where yours and mine don't change.

Totally agree MLC. I actually don't mind hearing the diesel around town and at freeway speeds I actually reckon the 1KD is pretty quiet for a diesel.

Reliability without all the extra watching of this and that is what we all want, will the 1GD deliver....time will well.

Problem is Toyota took almost 15 years to improve the 1KD . . . which in my opinion is unacceptable to be honest. They never cared to even slightly improve the engine in absolutely any way during all that time. Thats why im interested in the power and NVH improvements since it took them 15 years to release a new engine and replace the archaic 1KD.
Im expecting a LOT for an almost 15 years of improvements.
Sadly we dont get the 1GD-FTV here. At least not now, they are still selling the NEW Hilux and 2016 Prado with the 1KD AFAIK.
