Hi All,
We just got back from our school holiday trip to Birdsville and the rest of South West QLD - the entire family had a ball.
The highlight for me was our trip out to Poeppel Corner from Birdsville. I never found a lot of detailed information in one place on what to expect, so thought I would share what we experienced. Thanks to a lot of the many threads on PradoPoint, I was able to piece a lot together and prepare the vehicle (2010 Prado GXL Diesel).
We went out and back on the same day - back in time for dinner at Birdsville Pub - after spending more than an hour on Big Red watching the sunset.
We left early - 5.30am and made our way to Little Red. Let the tyres down to around 17psi and by then the sun was up and we were ready to go.
In all (Birdsville to Birdsville) we traveled 255km and used just over 58 ltrs of Diesel. The trip took about 13.5 hrs including stops, photo opps, lunch at the corner and over an hour on Big Red at the end - total moving time was 10hrs 46mins. We didnt rush - as we wanted to take in all the experience of being there as well.
I'd prepared to stay out there for the night (just in case - but the wife isnt a camper) - took a swag and enough water for probably 3 or 4 days and had all the recovery gear - maxtrax, hitch, recovery points, straps, winch etc. and invested in a sand flag. Given we werent leaving QLD - I didnt need a Desert Parks Pass.
I also invested in a InReach satellite device so we were never out of contact, if we wanted to be! And of course, had the UHF on Ch10 to call our position and direction every 5 or 10 klicks. We only met 3 or 4 cars on the entire trip. Most were Poms.
The car performed flawlessly up the dunes - and made it up the 'hard' track on big red in Low gear pretty easy with my new set of BFG KO's.
If its on your bucket list - its definitely worth the trip! We also got to experience all the other outback towns, like Boulia, Winton, Eula, Yowah, Haddons Corner and finshed with a couple of days on farm stay at Trilby Station....
Here's a couple of my fav pics on the trip to Poeppels Corner - one with the kids hanging out the window taking pics....
