  • Grande airbags

Hi Guys, New to the Prado scene I got myself a 2008 Grande. Love it, could not be happier....... I have noticed the airbags sometimes seem to deflate. not having owned an airbag suspension car before i thought this was normal however after reading up on here, i may very well have a slow leak (a slow leak that is even for both sides seems odd also??).
My question is..... Am I right in assuming there is a leak and what sort of coin am I looking at for a replacement airbag kit (looks about $900 on ebay)

If there is a leak, will this make the airbag weeker?? I.E. will it be more likely to blow if I load up the rear????

    Cheers guys

Nah, you'll most likely have a leak in one - they are both connected together so if one leaks then pressure over the whole system will drop.
Mine were the same when I got my Grande, apparently they only have a 6-10 year lifespan until they start to perish.

You can go a few different ways:
1: Let it go & see how long it lasts - you may get a few more years out of it, but I wouldn't be doing this if you are going to go off the beaten track as they can split/pop.
2: Buy replacements off ebay - search "120 Prado Air Spring" and you'll get a heap of matches - can be had for $250 ish for both sides, but Im pretty sure they arent genuine & therefore am sceptical about the quality.
3: But "Airbagman" air springs - these are an upgrade as from all reports they are a lot thicker than the standard jobbies and cost about $900.
4: Buy them from the dealer - looking at about $500 PER AIRBAG......
or 5: Buy them direct from Amayama in Japan for $460 delivered for both of them - and they are the Genuine Toyota items, the same as you would get from the dealers!!

I ended up going the Amayama route and putting the standard ones back in - work great, no mods needed & they arrived to me from Japan before they had even taken the dosh out of my paypal account!

Now the other factor to bear in mind is if you are looking at getting a lift.
The standard travel airbags can be known to pop out of their bottom housing at full articulation.

Two ways to fix this is to keep the standards & get a spacer kit from one of our members AMTS which will stop them from popping out.
Alternatively, the airbagman kits come in a 2 inch lift as well, so it will negate these dramas.

      Thanks buddy,
I like the option of the genuine, I don't go off the beaten track very much so I don't think the heavy duty versions are worth it for the workload I will give them. I prob would not be getting it flexing very often but I would be interested in a spacer style lift for extra clearance for water crossings etc.

I did have a look at the Amayama website and........ to be honest got a little confused. it looks too easy to order the wrong ones.
My 2008 V6 Grande doesn't seem to be displayed. Sorry for the rookie questions

          Beat me to it!

Yeah Amayama uses all OEM part numbers, so you are best off to find out the part number you are after and search that way.

Its a bit awkward the ordering system, but it works well & pretty much half price of the dealers for the same thing!

Thought I would just add my question here rather than start a new thread - one of my air bags seems to have pooped itself. What is the quickest yet most cost effective replacement? Do I need to replace both or just the buggered one? I'm a bit broke after replacing all brake pads and rotors last week and landing myself in hospital to boot so looking to spend as little as I can. Driving isn't very comfortable at the moment so really need to fix it!

The airbags are unique to each side. It would be better to replace both of them due to the age of the rubber. Amayama is probably the cheapest and quickest.

OK thanks. I had a look on the site and saw them for 127 each usd but shipped from overseas or 330 usd shipped from Australia. Although it was late, i may not have been reading properly. Does that sound right? Do you know how long they take to come from overseas?

I really should just park it and brush up on manual driving skills and pinch my husbands car!

The last set I bought for someone else was just under AUD500 delivered. It takes about 5 working days to arrive.

Do these airbag part numbers apply to all Grande 120's? I know the thread is talking about a 2008, mine is a 2005 petrol and hasn't had the airbags replaced yet (its playing on the back of my mind and I am just waiting for them to fail).

As far as I know they do.
All suspension components over the 120 series were unchanged.

Your bags may still be ok, but having said that it probably wouldnt hurt to change them over - you dont want to get stuck & have to pay the good old Toyota tax from the dealer!!

Thanks topic97, I will have a look into buying from amayama. I think it would be a good "peace of mind" investment.

Just to confirm (so that I don't waste money I can't afford) here is a screen shot of the airbags I am going to buy from amayama - can anyone confirm whether these are the correct parts??

                              Thanks for your help!
