    VKPrado- Day 2, Part 2

Out of the forest we went into the seaside township of Bellingham for a comfort stop and to let some air out of the tyres ready for the sand and then it was down onto the beach.

Not all formed roads/tracks and was steeper than it appears.

    Down onto the beach.

All 26 Prado's lined up in all their glory.

Beleive it or not this can be a hazardous crossing when the tide is in and can have quite a drop into the river sometimes but on this day all was on our side.

The beach run had a dune section in the middle with quite a steep dune to climb if you wished to.

What goes up must come down.

Finishing off the dunes Dakar style.

Our last regroup just out of Scottsdale before reaching camp for the night at Myrtle Park.

        VKPrado- Day 3, part 1

Todays transport stage would take us from Myrtle Park on both forestry roads and bitumen to Legerwood. At legerwood we view the tree carving which were done using a chainsaw. From there it was onto Pyengana for sampling of cheese, visiting the Pub in the Paddock and St. Columbia falls.
From the falls it was back roads winding our way up and over to our over night stop at Weldborough behind the Weldborough Hotel.

One of the cheese samples was a bit hot for someone.

          Outside the cheese factory.

          St. Columba Falls.

From the falls we made our way up past Ralph Falls which was closed and then up and over Dead Horse Hill into Weldborough for our stay for two nights

            VKPrado- Day 4, Part 1

Todays plan "was" to go from Weldborough and taking as many unslead roads as we could, make our way out to Musselroe Bay to take a closer look at the wind farm.

Doing the reccies for this stage it was noted that a bridge was a bit suspect so some work was undertaken to make the crossing a bit easier and safer. Care would have still been required to cross it but it was doable.

The time from the last reccie to the day we had planned to take all 26 Prado's, someone had been down the track and decided that all the good work done to the bridge to make it passable was not a good idea and had cut the logs we had put in and now making it un-passable.
There was two trains of thought when it was decided we were not going to let this stop us. One was to try and make the bridge passable and the second was to try and make the bypass passable.

Everyone in the first group leapt into action and with chainsaws and shovels going, a lot of work was done in a short time. The bridge option looked liked it wasn't the best so all efforts went into the creek bypass. By now the second group had arrived and offered assistance. A very quick committee meeting was undertaken and it was decided to turn groups 2 & 3 around and to bypass this part of the route.

Being the leader of the first group VKPrado was the first to test the creek/ mud crossing. Slow and steady got me acroos the creek/mud and the front wheels up the bank but that was as far as I was to go. Out came the recovery gear from ARB and I got to use the winch I won at the 2014 GTG for the first time. As the vehicles started going through, adjustments to the exit bank were made to make it easier. out of the 12 Prados in the in group, only two had to winch with the rest actually driving out of the creek/mud.

Group picture taken from atop of a Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform.

            Damage to the bridge.

Many hands made light work of the bypass. Shovels and a chainsaw (sold and service by Tas Chainsaw and Mower products) were an order of the day.

            First Prado attempting the crossing.

The fearless leader using his winch for the first time to pull himself out.

First one to drive the crossing.

              The second one to winch.

              Everyone watching the action.

                VKPrado- Day 4, Part 3

After our challenge we made our way out to the wind farm at Cape Portland. The committe had a couple of surprises for those attending the GTG with both a tour either inside a wind tower or a close up of the control room that controls the wind farm and also some wine tasting with wine supplied by Brown Brothers from their Devils Corner vineyard.

All set up for the tasting and what a destination and view.

Up close and personal with a wind turbine.

                Just how tall are these?

After the bridge episode in the morning we had to have some sort of drama on our way back. The leader of the first group, VKPrado, decided that a wheel changing exercise was required after being alerted to a deflating tyre. It was discovered that a rock had actually broken off in the tyre so a plug could not be used so the spare was fitted.
The flat tyre was used by AJ120 that night as a demonstration of how to break the bead of a tyre and use a mushroom patch from the inside to repair the damage.

Looks like ingenuity and teamwork wins the day!

Thanks for posting these VK, these GTGs look like a lot of fun for the attendees. Hopefully I can make next year’s, wherever that may be...

As an aside, call me a bleeding heart green but I hope that wasn’t in a National Park, all those healthy trees/bushes being hacked and slashed? I’m sure Pradopointers are far too respectful of nature to be doing that sort of thing…..

                    VKPrado- Day 4, Part 4

As had been the case every day we had tried to stay off the sealed roads and use back tracks where possible to show the diversity of the terrain and sights we have in Tasmania.
We called into Little Blue Lake which is very blue in colour from the mining that happened in the area in the past. After a very quick stop it was onto the next possible challenge but the water levels were down and the ground was hard so all good on this trip.

After this crossing a quick committee meeting took place. With all the planning that went into this GTG we had started to run out of time to get back to camp at a nice time so the decision was made to offer everyone and option. The chose was head back to camp or continue on the original planned route.

                      VKPrado- Day 4, Part 5

The "sting in the tail" as I had called it is a nice little drive through rain forest and plantations. It is basically the Derby Jeep Track just out of Derby.
The plan was to look at Casscade Dam but due to the rain leading up to the GTG the dam was now full compared to a couple of weeks before when I had driven down on the the dam spill way. We made our way to the last challenge of the day which was a very rocky creek crossing and technical climb out. I think everyone who did do this part of the trip enjoyed it. We made it back to camp about 5:30pm and I had to buy tea at the hotel for my family this day but well worth it.

Photos don't do it justice but this was a bit technical but fun with only one side step needing to be strightened or was that repalced(wink Tiny)?

And so this bought and end to day 4 of the 2015 GTG.

                        VK great posts.
Day 4 was a great day.
At the creek crossing it really showed what the GTG is all about with everyone jumping to help.
Some even jumped it the mud in search of a recovery track that was never found.
Also having one of the sponsors (Tas Chansaws) along for the day was good to see.

No need to worry, no National Parks were harmed in the making of the GTG.
The track was just through normal everyday Tassie bush - no trees were dropped, just a couple of small damaged branches trimmed.
