  • Wiring my ARB compressor

I have one of the single motor High Output compressors, I have moved it from under the bonnet to fit the dual battery to the rear of the Prado. I have power to the unit, but cannot get it working, after checking all the connections they all appear good,
My only thought is does the ARB supplied relay need to be earthed? under the bonnet it was bolted to the mudguard and would have been earthed.
    Any other thoughts?

The relays earth is through one of its pins.

Check the power and earth at the compressor. If it has both 12V and earth then the compressor is cactus. If it doesn't work out where it has power up to or why it doesn't have earth and report back.

        Hi Gerry,

Here a simple schematic I drew up of the way my compressor is wired, it's about as basic as it gets. Are you saying you've got power at the compressor or at the relay? As previous posts indicated, if you've got power at the compressor then the relay must be working to supply power to it so I assume it can only be the compressor earth, or the compressor itself, that is the problem.

I'm sure I'll find something else....

A common issue people have with diagnosing electrical issues is to put the earth from their test light or multi meter onto an independent Earth, power checks out OK at the device so they think it should work, but if there is a fault in the Earth side of the circuit it wont work, so maybe double check that side.

The relay for my ARB compressor is bolted to the plastic air cleaner box, so definitely forget about that needing to be mounted to the body.

          Cheers Andrew

Is the compressor tank still holding pressure, eg. have you connected the air hose or fitting?
This would activate the pressure switch on the compressor when the pressure released.

After a bit more investigating and testing i have determined the following
              1) The Earth is good, I connected my fridge to the power supply
              2) I have power all the way to the relay, then after this no power
              3) Air tank was depressurised
              4) After a call to ARB they told me it was likely to be either the relay or pressure switch

Will try the relay first, then if that does not work then fit a new pressure switch.
after doing a search it appears people are replacing the relay with a 70 amp Narva relay, as the original is consired too light for the task. Can anybody see any issues with this?
Thank you everybody for your feedback it was all very helpful

              Regards

              Gerry

Do you have voltage onto the coil of the relay Or just the switch contact? When you have the switch on you should have 12 volts between the coil terminals. You can check the relay by putting 12 volts on one side of the coil and earth on the other side of the coil because it could be your switch.
Fitting a higher rated relay is ok, could actually save problems later if the ARB is a bit light

Short the pressure switch out to see if the compressor runs.

                    Guys
Thanks for the feedback, the issue was operator error in the wiring, called into my local ARB store (ARB Artarmon) who diagnosed it in 2.5 nanoseconds.
