During recent Simpson Desert trip I noticed 1 of the 4 air filter clips was undone. I contacted my Toyota dealer few days ago to ask if this could have caused any engine damage. Also suggested cause would either be faulty clip or during recent service the technician did not put all 4 clips on properly. Has anyone else experienced this problem and can it cause any engine damage. Inside top of air filter cover only had very minimal dust when I checked it.

On my first 120 I had one of the clips broken at one of the services and I didn't notice for some time, it didn't cause me any issues, but that's not to say it couldn't have.
What you need to look at is any signs of dust downstream of the air filter, if dust gets in upstream its not a big deal as it needs to pass through the filter. Slip the filter out and check for dust past it, if all is clean I would say you are good as gold.

This is a good check to do when buying a second hand 4wd. Any dust after the filter could mean poor service history and lots of dirt road following others too close.
