  • Alternatives to Oziexplorer for Android

    Hi all,
Big trip in a few weeks, and in the interest of saving a few pennies and NOT buying a HN7, I thought I'd go with Oziexplorer on an Android Tab.
I'm now thinking it was a pretty big mistake. I've probably spent $300-$400 on the app, PC software plus Hema 2015 maps, but the Android app is buggy to say the least. I made this purchase quite a while ago in the hope that the BETA (test) version of the app would make it to an final release, but alas, it has not.
The issues I'm having: app crashing consistently when trying to navigate to waypoints. Trying to delete all waypoints in the app, but many still remain, and several others. The (anti-) navigation one kind of renders the app useless.
I'm using it on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S, which is by no means under-cpu'd.

My Question. Are there other decent Android apps out there (besides HEMA Explorer), where I can make use of the several hundred dollars spent on the Hema 2015 maps.

I do have an Ipad 2 (no-GPS) with the full Hema app/maps plus a BT GPS, but the fact I have to power a separate GPS turns me off. There must be a decent Android app.
Any help appreciated. I have asked the Oziexplorer people for help with the PC software, to which they responded almost immediately, but when I asked about the Android app, I didn't receive a response.

Androzic works with hema and oziexplorer maps. I use ozi for android on a galaxy tab 3.0 8" and don't have any of the problems your experiencing?
    No worries

We use Memory Map. I'm not sure if you can use the existing Hema maps but you can buy new ones :-)

We just use it to look at maps - haven't tried the navigate to waypoint stuff. You can download it for free with a basic 1:1M map to play with then buy maps if you think it is any good.

You can use maps in ECW format. Memory Map said:
It can be done by opening the ECW in ER Viewer and saving them as Geotif, then opening them in MMap.

However, I don’t think there are many current maps in ECW that we don’t publish.

Memory Map app and PC software is free (its what I use with Hema and NSW 25k Topo) but you'll need to pay extra to get the import feature activated - may as well pay $79 to get the full hema maps. Navigating to waypoints is pretty basic - its straight line navigation. ie no auto routing in the app

Perhaps you've already got the Hema maps on your PC with Ozi Explorer - no problem. In theory you can convert the maps you already have for use in Memory-Map (see here) but in practice simply using the free app and downloading/buying the Hema maps with a Mobile Only licence is a more cost and time effective way of getting the Hema maps on your iPad. Both Memory-Map and Ozi Explorer use the GPX Overlay format so you can easily share route, track and waypoint data between Memory-Map on the Mobile Device and Ozi on the PC.

Alternative is get a cheap 7 inch gps from ebay (suction cap to your windscreen)

Run IGO primo for your street maps and OZI EXP for you off road stuff.

          Set you back around $100.

I run this on my headunit and set my mate up with this alternative for his old cruiser and his truck for work.

We just recently got back from 18 months travelling oz and this setup never let me down.

You can use use your Hema maps for ozi and i would be happy to send you out everything i have at postage cost.

          PM me if your interested

I was utterly wrong in my first post. Now back from the trip, Oziexplorer on a 10" Samsung tablet was brilliant. My 2 other travel companions both had HN7's and certainly one of them had the sh**s big time with it. Small screen for the older eyes, and only one of the front seat passengers could view it at a time. The big 10" display of the Samsung, with pre-loaded daily route plots was superb.

Just FYI, software releases go from Alpha -> Beta -> Commercial Release.
