  • 1kz engine swap

    Hey guys

My 1KZ engine on my 120 GXL has been running like crap for a while now and I finally managed to pick up a damaged VX prado with a strong 1KZ to swap over. If I attempt to swap the engines over I wont need to change the ECU do I? If I did swap the ECU would the car run using the original GXL key?

    Cheers
    Yaz

Does that mean I can use the VX ecu with my GXL key?

Do the valve clearances whilst you have acess.
I just checked our and all of the the inlet valve clearances had closed up.
Its running strong and starting sweet now, was running like a POS before.

Just an update. Ended up replacing the engine on the prado and still ran like crap... Left with no option I swapped the ECU over, fired her up and what do you know it ran perfectly... Was an ECU problem all along which caused the engine to run rough and black smoke. Had no warning lights come up in the previous engine so was assured it wasn't an electrical/ECU issue. Took it to Toyota and had them run a diagnostic which came back all good. First time experiencing this sort of problem. Now I've got a 1kz with a rebuilt fuel pump, injectors and record head sitting here which may be strong all along.
