  • Installing Climate control (electronic) into 2005 GXL (Non electronic)

    First time post here guys so I apologies if it doesn't turn out right.

    I am attempting to install a climate control unit from a Grande into my GXL 2005. I thought before I attempt to rework out what could have already been done, I would ask on here. Has anyone done this before? If so what were the known issues & does anyone have any learning they could pass on?

    I'm not 100% sure on the 120 prado specifically, but a lot of the time a standard HVAC and a climate control HVAC and their wiring is completely different on the same model cars.

    Reason being, majority of the climate control cars use multiple motors & sensors to switch the blend door motors & mode doors & also seperate temp sensors located internally & externally to modify the temperature, whereas standard vehicles often use a simple vacuum system connected to the temp & mode switches to operate the blend door & mode doors.

    Another issue may be lack of present wiring & what type of wiring is needed.
    I would be extremely surprised if its just a plug & play scenario, as a lot of car manufacturers will save money by having two separate wiring looms depending on models.
    And having said that, a lot of the newer cars are going down the fully integrated canbus route, which may require a complete new electrical loom for the whole car as well as BCM & ECM.

    I could be wrong & you might be able to plug and play - as I said, I haven't had to really deal with the 120 prado system in the past, but these are some of the issues you may encounter.
    Just make sure you do oodles of research before you start pulling apart your dashboard.

          thanks guys. Amts have you done this conversion before. I am getting the unit out of a reck so I will be able to pull as much as I need out. Do you recommend just following to loom out to each sensor and taking them all as a whole unit?

            No I have a Grande and I can hear the doors moving around mixing the temps. Hence my reply above. It is not a straight forward swap of the centre console.

              Yeah I have managed to get my hands now on some wiring schematics and relay diagrams. There is abit to pull out of grande to get it working but I can't see any real show stoppers once I get the gear out.

                  Remember when we drove cars without air conditioning? How did we survive? Sounds like a lot of work to me. Good luck with the project.

                    If it was I, I would be selling the 05 and buying a late 07 onwards GXL with Climate in it already.

                    This job will present so many headaches, and you will end up giving up. But, if you do try, good luck and hope it all works out. Keep us posted.

                      Seb,

                      an 08 GXL should already have climate control as standard. Any post Sept 07 update had climate control as standard.
                      2008 V6 GXL Graphite, Sovereign bar, LED spotties, BFG A/T tyres, King Springs on rear with KYB off road shocks, Engel 40lt fridge, Dual batteries, Uniden CB.
