  • Yet another injectors thread, but I do need the help

    All,

I've been a long time reader on this subject, and to be honest most of the threads go down a line where I get completely lost. So I'm hoping for some newbie level advice on this:

We've got 120 diesel 1KD which is knockin' pretty hard. When we park her nose down we'll have some difficulty in getting her to turn and start, especially in the cold weather with plenty of blue smoke. From what I've read this is pretty symptomatic of an injector issue and this has been confirmed by the garage, 4 Traction in Artarmon, they ran some tolerance tests and the report came back "way off".

Now we love our Prado, and we've put some cash behind it. New bullbar, suspension, electronics etc and we don't want to say goodbye to it yet. Is it worth getting the injectors replaced and what kind of price range should I be looking at for parts and maintenance? I genuinely would love to be able to do this myself and it feels like the majority of the posters on this forum are capable of such a thing, but alas no I'll need to put some cash behind it to get it fixed.

    tl;dr;?

    Details -
    Prado 120 series 2007
    Engine 1KD
    Odo: 210kkms
Symptons: Engine Knock + Blue Smoke when parked nose down
Problem: Do I replace the injectors, or sell the car?
Questions: If I replace the injectors, what kind of cost (including labour) should I budget for?

    Cheers all - Ian

    Hi Ian,

Sounds like you have blow by at the injectors seats. My guess 2 or 3 out of 4.
Probably been leaking a while & about to seize up. Might sound scary, I hope so, as specialist in this matter, I can tell you be concerned.
Damage is being done! Don't drive it.
Of corse it worth replacing the injectors, I did one just like your the other day, classic case of blow by & shagged Injectors by the sounds if it.
Buy a newer vehicle & depreciation will cost you a lot more. Also They still need injectors periodically.

    Open estimate:

    Parts $2000.00
Labour to do the job right & related work $1000.00

    Or

On a cut corners budget, $2000.00 fitted.

Once done properly you won't know yourself.

Feel free if you would like to contact me for further expert advise.

Have you received the recall notice from Toyota to replace the injector seats??? mine is 2007 and is part of the recall so I recon yours is too. If you are not the original owner you most likely wont receive the letter so drop into Toyota dealer with your VIN#.

Its a perfect opportunity to get "Free Labour" from Toyota given they remove the injector to replace the seat.
      - all you need to do is provide the new injectors, pipes etc.
There may be a small charge to recode the injectors and install the pipes.

Yes get them done - they're a part that needs replacing every 100,000-120,000 km by all accounts.

I didn't do mine myself either as I would have had to do the work on the street! - I ended up getting Bailey's in Wollongong to do the job but these guys offer a fixed price service to replace with brand new Denso injectors - from memory it was around $2,500. Give them a call to get a price.

One last week, had the recall done, then he had to bring it to me to get the job done properly.
The parts & labour was still less than Toyota quoted him for parts only.
He regrets letting tem damage it, I mean work on it

If it is the injector seats, you really need to get the oil intake sieve checked and if necessary cleaned.

This is the problem you likely have

This is what your oil pickup looking Inside the sump plug might look like

This is what it may look like with your sump off

This is what it should look like

If it cannot pick up oil, your engine will be starved of lubrication & it will be damaged & may seize.

Ok cool, so the decision is made I'll get em sorted out. 3k is helluva site cheaper than 12k! I'll get it booked in pronto. I'll see what Traction 4 (an ARB outfit) in Artarmon advise and quote. They've got history with the car, they know it pretty well. But I'll still give those guys http://www.reliabledieselinjection.com.au/services a shout and get them to quote on it too.

All you've been super helpful, I really do appreciate the advice.
