  • Dobinsons Monotube Remote Reservoir Shock Absorbers

    Hi all,

I am in the process of researching suspension upgrades for our 2014 GXL 150. Would be interested to know if anyone has any feedback on the Dobinsons Monotube Remote Reservoir shocks on their Prado? They are a few more $'s than the Dobinsons twin tube gas shock option and I am keen to know if they are worth it.

    Cheers, Damo

Interesting, I didn't think they were out yet.

    120:

    Front: MR59-50221
    Rear: MR59-50701

    150:
    http://www.dobinsonsprings.com/4x4-v...prado/toy-100/
    Front: MR59-50700
    Rear: MR59-50701
Do we have specs, and what is the cost?

Ok, just rang, $330 per shock, fitting in SA approx $450 Stock is about a month away. Rear shocks the reservoir is on the shock, the fronts have a separate reservoir that requires mounting.

I have ordered a set for for my new, to me, 120. I had Bilstein/Dobinsons on my last 120 and was not happy, had too much of a boat feeling around corners.

      I went with:
      Front: MR59-50221
      Rear: MR59-60701 (longer droop - 615mm)

I had the option of going the MR59-60682 for the rear for an even longer rear droop of 630mm mated with a progressive spring but was concerned about the swaybar limiting the travel, then if i extended it having issues with brake lines etc.

jamieprado, do you have the closed/open specs for the fronts?

You might need to wait a bit longer for some research/feedback of the mrr's
IMO a lot dearer, more than double the price. Depending on use, maybe not required.
They were not required till now...........$$$$
I was given the specs, but not sure about if they are ideal.
I'm fitting some probably next week or 2, will have some feedback after then.
They are drip feeding the stock, that will keep people fighting over them once there is plenty of stock in the country I might throw a set in mine, but then there is another new product from another supplier I need to test out. Time will tell.
615mm is getting a bit long in the rear full ext, yes res are piggy backed on rears.
I think the front might be about 560 ish from memory.

            Hey all,

I'd also be interested to hear what the closed/open lengths are on the front struts. Hopefully #### can check some measurements for everyone soon!

Looks like price-wise they are in direct competition with Amada Xtreme remote res at around 300 bucks.

Both Dobinsons and Amadas have a leaky history with their seals, so will be interesting to see how these new Dobinsons go.

...forgot to mention that the ring eye center to coil seat distance seems a bit low in the Dobinsons catalogue at around 213mm, from memory this should be around 225mm for the Prado??

Shouldn't really matter, as the adjuster can just be wound up on the strut, however, their quoted lift figures from various coils will be different relative to the factory strut.

Good point, I can't remember, too many numbers
They *may have just used the Hilux part numbers for Prado.
That's one of the reasons I said I'm not sure the specs are ideal.
*may is may have, not have.

                Something else for you Mark, new part number 627, it's a 327 @ 420mm (10mm longer)
I will be using these from now on as 327 does not give 50mm with 100-300kg.

My Prado rear coil range is:

                325 no load.
                627 100-200kg
                487 200-300kg

                Cheers

                  Hey ####,

After running the 327's for over 6 months, and with a false mdf floor/abr flyer batt box/fridge always in the back, I am disappointed with the height at the rear. Even with 10psi in my airbags running around town, the rear end never quite levels at the ride height you want, and it always looks saggy to me.

I've had a pair of 487's sitting in the garage for 6 months now, 430mm free height, 280lb/in, so should sit 20mm higher than the 327's. I'll get them in soon and try them without the airbags first.

I'm currently running 30mm longer swaybar links in the rear, with a 618mm open length shock. I have some longer Toytec brake lines to put in soon, so I'll also be measuring at what open length the swaybar binds at with the 30mm longer links.

I'm hoping to run an 11" shock (or longer closed 10") to recover the 1" of droop I'll prolly lose when I put in the 487 coils. The 487's will prolly put the rear around 3" of lift, and with 1:1 motion ratio, you'll lose 1" of droop going from 2" to 3" lift.

I don't think the swaybar will fully straighten at the extended link at full droop, so it may not be possible to get the full 30mm of extra swaybar length added back into a longer open length shock.

That figure of 630mm open length for the MR59-60682 might be getting close to the limit with 30mm longer links and longer brake lines.

Will be good to know these numbers, as I don't wanna run with my swaybar out or space my bumpstops and lose bump travel. The rear end of the Prado is a pain to get sitting right, and I'd like to keep 100mm of droop at 3" lift.

Anyone got the closed length for that MR59-60682?

Many thanks all for the advice above.

I'll be following ####'s advice and will go with a more tried and tested option while the feedback comes in on the MRRs = Bilsteins with Dobinsons springs.

                    Cheers, Damo

                        Hi Peter,

Have had the MRR on for about 2 months and 10,000k, love them. Travelling around oz and used them on corrigated roads, whoops, off road, rocks, sand etc and they perform great.

                          I ended up getting them too - they've been on for 3 weeks and 7500kms (Sydney-Adelaide-Flinders-Adelaide-Poeppel Corner-Birdsville-Cameron Corner-Sydney).

They seem to work ok though to be honest I'm not sure how to gauge how well they work.

The Sydney Dobinson guys fitted mine and did a dodgy job - they put the hose for the rear drivers side between the body & the chassis. I asked and they said it would be ok - the hose is armoured with steel braiding. Anyway... it wasn't ok and when we got to the top of Mt Gill there was an odd smell at the back of the car - the chassis had cut the hose and the oil was being pumped out on every bump all over the car & exhaust. Luckily it isn't flamable!

I spoke with Martin from Dobinson's Sydney and he was apologetic. He arranged for some replacement "yellow" Dobinson shocks to be sent to Hawker (south end of Flinders Ranges) for me. We drove around for a few days with only 1 rear shock working - a weird feeling as it kept bottoming out on that corner! - then swapped in the replacement shock for the drive home via the Simpson. I've since noticed that the two front hoses are rubbing on the driveshafts sometimes - perhaps when it bottoms out.

When I get a chance I'll be taking it back to Dobinsons Sydney to get the MRR shock put back in and the front ones fixed up. Martin has handled it well - no attempt to blame me and he sorted out something to get me back on the road so we could continue our holiday. So no complaints about the boss! I'm not so impressed with his installers... 3 out of the 4 shocks have install issues. I suspect that if anyone else gets them to do a 150 Prado they'll get it right - I'm really hopeful they will learn from their mistakes!

                            Sorry, better late than never?
Yes correct ask me which springs not Dobinsons.
                            327 are useless. I don't use them
I use 325 a bit, also my custom springs 10mm longer than 327c
Also 487's, yep put those in!!!
If you have a 200kg constant load, that will get you 2", not the illy 327 listing.

No got the shits with no brackets, sent them back, I'm not an engineering workshop.
Offered help from my expert engineer, not sure if they are taking up the offer, but they are organising brackets.
Soon as brackets are done, I should be doing a couple of sets.
