  • Alternator 14.6 volts on start up

    Gday guys.

I noticed the Prado is pumping out 14.6 volts this morning when I started it up.

Previously ive only seen it charge at about the 14.2 mark, which I have been happy with.

From what I understand, 14.6 is pretty high, and I didn't think an alternator could charge at such a high rate.

Is there something I should be checking or does this sound about right?

    Cheers Drew.

    Drew,

It seems right to me. Mine does that too, particularly on cold mornings.

I may be wrong, but I believe the Voltage is varied with the ambient temperature. You will see as the car warms up the voltage drops.

Mine always varies with ambient temperature colder climate bringing on higher voltage.

In winter I get 14.6 (once 14.7) on start up but soon settles down between 13.9 to 14.1.

When I get time I will build a switchable diode so I can push the voltage up or down depending on what season it is or where I am.

Sounds pretty much like what I see, hi voltages on start up are even more common if it hasn't run for a while or I have had something running and the battery is a touch low.

(yes I realise taking a reading downstream from the batt isnt accurate but I know the UHF reads 0.1v to 0.2v high...)

I happened to check mine with my multimeter yesterday and it was sitting in the mid 14s for about 3-5 minutes after starting the car.

Also forgot to mention I have my own dual diode and yes fused. Prior to installation in summer it would get down to 13.2v but now settles around 13.9 to 14.1.

This morning was cooler and voltage started at 14.7v but for the first time remained around 14.6v for 15 to 20 min. Usually it drops after 5 min run time.

Ok cool. 14.7 volts really isnt anything unusual by the sounds of it.
                          All good and thanks dudes.
