D4D Engine Rattle at 70kmph / 1500rpm

Hi All,

I have a 2010 Prado GXL D4D with 90,000km on the clock and when driving at around 70-80kmph revving at 1500rpm there is a distinct engine rattle noise coming from the engine. Over this speed or under this speed it normally goes away.

It has always been serviced by Toyota and when I bought it to their attention they stated it was the air box and as such made some alterations. The engine still rattles and after reading up about the injectors on the D4D I am starting to get a little concerned.

Any recommendations?

Have you had the injector feedback test done? If not do it. Mine has 80k and one of the injectors is getting a bit of a high reading so your could be on the way out.

No not yet however seems to be the first port of call. Does anybody have any recommendations where to get this test done?( Perth SOR).

Looking for somebody who is reputable as if the test comes back with bad results I will also get them to perform the fix.

The fact it only occurs at 1500 rpm suggests its not injectors as this would occur across a range of revs. 1500 rpm is a point of resonance for the air intake system. Check the airbox mounts and if there is any contact between the airbox and the body work where the airbox intake passes through the the body work. Toyota released a fix for this problem involving the replacement of the airbox mounting rubbers, I just made my own.

Seem pretty good to me at that engine temp. I would be looking at that air box and associated area now, do you have a snorkel?

No snorkel fitted all just standard at the moment. Agree with having to take a closer look at the air box now....

Hi , I got dynamax sound insulation professionally fitted in the drivers side wheel well. It has quietened the diesel noise and got rid of the resonance sound. There is a thread raised on this - 1500 rpm. hope this helps.
