  • Strange noise only after slowing after long drive

Ok I have just had 2008 Prado checked out by Toyota in an attempt to track down a squealing noise that occurs sometimes when slowed down for towns etc after long periods of highway driving. The noise goes away when I accelerate to about 70km/h.
It does not always occur and changes in intensity when power is applied and only occurs while in motion. If I rest the car for about an hour it does not happen.
Originally thought it was rubbing brakes but if I gently apply brakes does not change. Think it is coming from left front of car.
Have changed fan belt and had back handbrake hubs cleaned out. Toyota could not find anything wrong. I have got under car with temperature gun and there is about 15 deg difference in cv driveshaft at gearbox end with the left one always hotter.
It has me worried as I do outback travelling and do not want a complete breakdown to occur.
Another thing is it first occurred about 6 months ago mainly when towing a van although once when not towing. Never occurred again until now when towing my van. It is not my van and once it occurs disconnecting the van the car still does it.
    Hope someone has idea.

    Maybe a bearing?

I had a very similar issue. Only does it when loaded up and only after an hour or more of driving. I went through heaps of things, checked brakes, bearings, replaced universal joints etc. and still couldn't get rid of it. Seemed to come and go with bumps but wasn't suspension related and wasnt a suspension type of sound, more of a rotational squeak/metal on metal rubbing type of sound. But I Ended up finding the exhaust spring loaded flange quite squeaky, lubed it up and the noise hasn't happened since. I went to the extent of dismantling the joint, lubing everything with high temp never seize. I tried spraying crc at first but it didn't stop the squeak.

Wondering if you ever figured out what the sound was? I have a 2011 that has the same symptoms.

No I traded it in on a 150 series before I got to the bottom of it. But I did lube the exhaust spring loaded flange as per MRW82 post which may have helped.
