  • E-Locker for 150 GXL thoughts and suggestions.

Does anyone have E-Lockers in their 150? Lynda is keen to get both front and rear lockers fitted. We considered air and may still go with them but I'm leaning towards the E-Lockers.
Any problems, thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

I am probably going to stick a TJM air locker in the back of mine. Had issues in past lives with ARB air lockers and #1 has twin TJM lockers on his Pooey and they have been very good. I was heading for an elocker but mixed thoughts about the forward/reverse ramping knocking the locker in and out.

Been running the rear E locker for a while now and have had no problem with the locker going in and out. I'm happy I went with an E locker over an ARB air locker, I've had problems with the ARB locker in the past in a Triton. At this stage I have not needed a front locker

        Thanks guys,
MJ Random, you refer to Forward / Reverse ramping, what do you mean by that? I haven't heard of that term before. I understand ramp over angles, but not sure about how that can cause lockers to lock / unlock.
Derek, what brand of E-Locker are you running ?

The locker engages by turning a ramp in the diff. There is talk that with the locker engaged if you rock back and forth the ramp disengages and the becomes open again. Now I can see how this can occur and there are frankly very few cases where people have reported it so it may or may not be an issue. I spoke with a guy who definitely experienced the problem when he was in a bog and he struggled to get out. That was pretty extreme and may not happen to many people. Derek hasn't experienced it and I trust his judgement as much as the guy I spoke with. But given that little bit of doubt I will just go with a TJM pro locker when the time comes. The pro locker in my opinion is a better unit than the ARB locker. And I can get a pro locker cheaper than either of the others which is a little more incentive.

Is there a significant benefit with air lockers over e-Lockers? I understand the ability to air up but this also requires a larger storage tank and higher capacity compressor. I have a 150l/min portable compressor that currently does the job we need. A couple of articles indicated the noise of the activating air as a benefit but also that the airlines are more prone to damage than the 12v wires.

I don't think there is a benefit or disadvantage of any system over another. Having the compressor on board is handy but there is no need for a tank, a solenoid block works just as well.

Ive got front and rear ARB lockers in mine. At 10,000ks both seals wore out apparently because ARB put the wrong oil in it. Oil went back up into the compressor and made a mess in my engine bay..
They've been pretty good since then.

If you do go with ARB, get them to fit a purge valve.

I read a 4x4 mag just recently in Darwin where they did a comparison of all lockers from Auto's ( Lokka) to e type Detroit and Arb and Tjm they took them into some pretty rough country and found the down side to the TJM and the ARB was the copper pipes getting damaged whereas the E locker being electrical worked well the only thing they found with the Elocker was its silence and the was no visible way to tell if it was engaged or not My suggestion if you go Elocker use a light indicator or something. ease of install was a factor as well . From what I read I was impressed so much so that I rang Harrod but the price killed it for me . Hope this may help Cheers Foxy

I have ARB locker in the rear, but won't do it again. The new style seals are rubbish. This is the 5th ARB locker i have had in 3 cars and the only one with problems.
Brothers 150 ARB locker is the same. Oil leaks past the seals, fills the airline with oil and after 10,000 km the air can't flow enough and the diff fails to lock.
E locker for me next time.

                          Rusty.
