  • RV6 Manual Gearing

So, I know that my RV6 has 4.1:1 gears, if I go to 265/75r16 tyres should I change the gearing to the 4.3:1's out of a GXL?
Will the bigger tyres have that much of an impact on the power and feel of the engine, I know it will actually make the car more fuel efficent on the HW but what about stop start driving around town?
Interested in comments and thoughts from anyone with a RV6 with the bigger tyres, I've already got 265/70's on atm.
From my calcs going to the 4.3:1 should bring me back close to stock gearing.

we just went from the 265 70 to 265 75 16 all this did was correct the speedo , now when it reads 60 we are actually doing 60 , oh and added 25 mm more clearance under my diffs - this was on a auto VX , different ratios

      Toopy,
Try searching as this has been discussed before, I believe you will notice the change however only you can decide if it is a major factor or not.

      Brissy,
The diameter will increase by approx. 26mm which will increase clearance by a max of 13mm not 26mm and yes I found the speedo is now close to correct.

        I did go from HTs to AT s , my old HTs 265 70 16 MEASURE 760mm diameter , the new ATs 265 75 16 measure 800mm diameter = 40mm increase in diameter = 20mm lift

So after a 2000km trip over the last few days I have come to the following conclusions

          1. With 265/70's the speedo is spot on
          2. When heavily loaded with equipment the 4.1's don't have any low end
          3. A lot of fuel/throttle is required to spin up the tires and all of the torque provided by the 5vz is waisted
          4. The 4.1's are more fuel efficent on long straight roads but how many roads are long and straight, the fuel saved is waisted plus more accelerating out of bends/floodways etc. a sixth overall gear and lower ratio 1st,2nd etc would be great with the 4.1's
          5. 4.3's would recover the lost torque and enable the engine to rev quicker (I changed the gearing on my old Grand vitara due to larger tires and it had the same result)
          6. A turbo or supercharger kit would probably be fine with the 4.1's due to the extra torque/power

As the S/C kit is quite pricey i'll probably look into the turbo kit from cx racing first, a small boost turbo 6-7psi should spool quite low in the rev range

You're right that 4.1's would be more fuel efficient on long straight roads but that's assuming you're going quite fast. All lifted 4wd's are more economical running under 100km/h and with diff ratio changes that becomes a little more important. By sticking to a max of around 95km/h I've found my diff ratio change (4.3 to 4.88) has actually saved fuel.

Would love to see a turbo conversion - hope you post up the process!
