  • Broken Down with only a flashing fuel light

G'day all wondering if anyone can shead some light on whats going on.
Just installed a long range tank. Driving along after doing about 850km and the low fuel light starts flashing (wasn't on beforehand). Rang a mechanic and he said that I needed a new filter and to change it. About 120km on and the car started surging then died. Fuel gauge showing 1/3 tank.
Fuel pump coming on, manual prime is constantly soft but is pumping fuel through. Cranks over but nothing happens.
No other lights but the flashing fuel light. This is the normal fuel light I'm talking about and not the one with the dots below it.
    Any ideas?

Sounds suspiciously like your front tank is empty and fuel hasn't transferred from the rear tank. I would try and fill up and see how much it takes and try prime and start it then.

    Cheers Andrew

Not sure if it is a similar issue in the Prado to a mate who installed a 140lt tank into a ford ranger [replacing 80lt] and his car stopped with fuel left. It had something to do with the trip computer reading distance to empty thinking the car was only functioning on the 80lt tank and not reconising the addition fuel left so shut motor down before empty. A fix was obtained by adjusting fuel level sender but now the gauge/distance to empty is incorrect.

that's exactly what's happened. I did some investigating on the side of the road and found the rear tank to be chock a block full. By this time the roadside assist mob was near. He towed me to a fuel station where i chucked some in and it runs like a dream again. Crappy thing was i was 212km from home. My package covers towing up to 200km but if you are more than 200km out then regardless of if you get towed or not there is a service fee (in my case $88). He had towed me only 10km at this point. Since i was going to get charged i got him to tow me the 200km back to ali prings at no extra cost saving me some fuel $$.
Anyway I think i may have hooked up the 5 lines on the sender wrong??? Does anyone know which one does what?

If you don't have a workshop Manuel now might be a good time to grab one, that may shed some light on the hoses. Failing that can you find another 150 to crawl under and follow the fuel lines?

Might pay to carry Jerry can until you get this one sorted!

          Cheers Andrew

We are bound to have another 150 owner in the Alice on the Forum that would let you crawl under their rig for a comparison!

Had a look in the service manual. The service manual has 3 lines going in; pickup, return and vent. Mine had 5, attached is photos of what I've found so far.
                Diagram of my investigation:

These are the hoses. Front of car is top of photo:

And this is the tank with the 5 mystery hoses:

If anyone has a photo of the inside of the pickup assembly or anything at all that could help I'd be so glad

I had a look, and I can't do it in the driveway without spending $100 on jerry's to hold the fuel so I've just booked it into TJM to deal with.
Turns out a flashing fuel light means critically low fuel and it's about to die. Heed that warning!

Hahahaha, good to know. Hopefully they won't charge you too much to do the job. Either that do the old ring around to friends and family to gather jerrys.
