Got the gearbox out of the car at the moment to deal with a rear main leak that developed after the seal was replaced as a precaution some time ago when a new clutch went in about 10,000k ago. There were no leaks or problems prior to that, but the oil leak began straight after the new seal went in.
Mechanic has just told me that my crankshaft has 2mm of end play and he can even move the flywheel flange side to side.
Claims that is the reason that the (non-genuine) rear main oil seal is leaking and no point in fitting a new seal, motor needs a rebuild.
The engine itself is a 3400V6 runs beautifully and it's got a manual trans, always had good oil in and regular changes, oil light goes out straight away etc.
So... back to the 2mm end play, I don't think that was done with a dial gauge (max end play is 0.3mm) and the side to side, well it's a very short crank with a long nose, only 4 bearings so I think that some movement might always be felt especially with the seal out.
Had a conversation with a Toyota parts man today, he said that for some reason the non gen rear main seals put in these motors will leak, and when a genuine one is put back in the leaking stops.
I plan to have a dial gauge measure first, have the box put back in, and then first thing after that is to do an oil pressure test. Depending on that outcome I'll add an oil gauge in the car to monitor it.
Wondering if anyone has experienced excessive crankshaft end play in their cars with the same engine?
