However, I will persevere as it's been almost a year already and once it reaches a conclusion I'll help where I can. for anyone on the same course of action - if you want to swap info you can contact me via email

      Greetings all,

Just a quick introduction to you all - we have owned our Prado 120 since new in May 2009.

It's our third Prado, the previous two being incredibly reliable and kept us happy for many years and hundreds of thousands of Kms.

We moved house a few years back and my commute changed so the Prado 120 has only done 95,000 kms. It's done some long trips and up until about 3 months ago I would say was the best one we've owned. Incidentally I use a Prado 150 at work and do not like that as much - the dashboard and general feel is not as smooth as the older 120.

About 8 weeks ago I started to notice a bit of smoke upon acceleration (especially at night as it's easier to see the soot etc), and mentioned it to the service guys I've been using for 15 years. They changed filters etc and said see how you go.

I had some suspicions and dropped into a friend's mechanic two days ago and that's when it started.....

They pulled the injectors and called me suggesting I get them tested - and I agreed.

Injector 1 and Injector 3 are almost completely destroyed and the seal failure issue has manifested itself, the manifold contains so much gunk they've had to scrape it out and there is evidence of further damage to components including the EGR. I don't know exactly what the damage is until I finish my shift tomorrow and get the train over to see the report they've produced including images of the damage and also the container of gunk.

So far the estimate to repair is around $4,000 - a complete injector replacement and including all tubes, seals etc with Denso gear top to bottom, extra fuel filters (the smallest Ryco they can get for me).

Whilst we are philosophical about this, and we have had a great run with Toyotas by and large, I am deeply disturbed by what I read here.

Surely all of the problems we've encountered cross over what is "normal" - can all these problems be slated home to "bad fuel" or "not following the advisory emails sent by Toyota"?

Get them to drop or at a minimum check the oil sump.

My story is almost identical Prado with 128k i bought second hand from Toyo, blowing smoke and rattly like a chaff cutter when cold. Injectors #1 and #3 were shot getting blow-by, which in turn was fouling the oil and the oil pickup in the sump was almost blocked.

I got out of it cheap because mine was in the "Customer Service Exercise" for the free injector seal replacement. So i bought a set of Denso injectors and fuel lines from ####, and Toyo installed them as part of the injector seal replacement so labour was free. I just paid about $150 to have the EGR and intake manifold chemical cleaned overnight while they were off.

It cost just under half of what you have been quoted. From memory the CSE ended with the 2008 models, not sure when yours was built but it may be worth checking if you can get the free seal replacement and avoid a chunk of labour costs.
