  • Brake Caliper Retaining Bolt Replacement

Hoping you guys can help me out. If I've missed this somewhere on the thread please let me know and ill atone for my sins.

Somehow my Rear RH brake caliper retaining bolts have disappeared. Cause: Vibration, magic, hijinkery or a weekend warrior in greater need than me - who knows.

Either way, I need to replace 2 of them but I'm not exactly sure what size bolt I'll need. It's not safe to drive and I'd like to avoid bringing home a grab bag full of goodies from Repco if I can. I can remove the Rear LH with a 17mm spanner (If I remember).

If any of you have tips/tricks on determining bolt sizes those would be welcome, as well.

Probably M12 grade 8 bolt but could be 1.25 or 1.5 pitch. Why not remove one off the other side and take it in. Better off at a bolt shop rather than Bunnies especially if it is fine thread.

Definatly get the right ones from spare parts, they are a flanged bolt in fine thread if I remember rightly, not easy to get from bolt shops. If you buy the right ones there is no issues about right grade, thread, length, etc.

Dealership only did mine up hand tight and forgot to torque it at 120k service before XMAS, noticed that night from the knocking noise when applying brakes...

            Thanks for the help!

Ended up going to the dealership and picking up 2 for $4.50. Worked a charm and drives as it should!

THIS is the reason I service my own vehicle(s) and now also my kids cars.

When my car was getting the roadworthy done when I bought it (the day before I was to collect it), the numpty mechanic who checked the rear brakes hand threaded the caliper bolts and only tightened up one side. I was on Fraser Island on the eastern beach doing 60km/h when the bolts dropped out 2 days later. The rear right caliper dropped into the wheel rim and locked the wheel up. Gouged out the rim too. I tied the caliper off with thin rope until I got back a week later. Both the dealership and the mechanic went into damage control denying any fault of any kind. The dealership principal said I was out of line by saying the roadworthy mechanic was at fault. The mechanic put the wrong bolts in as a replacement for the missing ones as that's all he must've had. I only realised a couple of years later when replacing the pads. I was pretty ticked off when I found out. He used longer bolts but spaced them out with several washers so they didn't gouge the rotor. Very dodgy experience.

Why would the bloke doing a roadworthy undo the brake caliper with the wheels off how much brake pad is left can be seen?
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

Maybe the rear brake pads needed replacing. It was a couple of years later when I needed to replace them so I'd say they were new or near new when I bought the car.
When I sold my wife's car recently the front brakes were 3/4 worn and the mechanic doing the road worthy said they prob had 6 months left on them. He asked that I replace them before they stamped the RWC. So I took the car straight home via a shop to buy brake pads and replaced them myself and took the car straight back to him for approval. But I didn't need to touch the caliper bolts being the front. You just pull the pads out with narrow grips and push the new ones back in.
