How far do you think this rim travelled without a tyre?

More info below in this post. But take a look at this post first and lock in your answer before you read on...

Pop quiz - the rim below has obviously rolled along the road at least a "little bit" without the tyre on. It was attached to a Tvan camper trailer (approx 1100kgs) at the time and was being driven along the main dirt road to Cape York - mixture of smooth & corrugated sections - at 60-80km/h.

What is the minimum distance you think it has travelled without the tyre? Bonus points* for ideas of how far you have to drive with a flat tyre for it to shred and fall off like the one below. Note that the tyre was found up the road from the rim.




Tyre was mounted with the white writing on the inside:




I'll explain more in a week or so what happened. I'm interested in peoples opinions without me adding in my ideas.

Looking at the rim damage, the short answer is too far...

But I'll go with 30km

I would say 300 km for that sort of damage.

Surely the driver towing the Van would have noticed the pull in the vehicle towing it and the noise.

I should clarify slightly - the tyre was found "x" meters/kilometers from when they stopped with the rim looking like the photos above... I'm interested in the "x" distance!

Interesting - quite different to the other answers. Do you mean the flat tyre traveled less than 200m then fell off the rim or rim traveled less than 200m without the tyre? Have you seen a rim self destruct that fast before?

I would guess the tyre was found about 700 meters from where they stopped as to how far they drove before the tyre left the rim after it went flat 2 kilometres

Tyre shredded left the rim launched down the road and the rim made it another hundred meters..........1100kg van may seem light but 500kg riding on the rim alone on a corrugated road will take next to no time to root it. Looks like the studs didn't start to flog out so it wasn't run like that for long.

Then again, perhaps the tyre came off once the rim was flattened?
