  • Different brand spark plugs installed (??)

    Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has made a similar finding...

Recently bought a 2005 V6 Gxl manual with 88,000 on the clock, one owner, full Tojo service history. When I picked up the car, the first owner gave me all of the service dockets. I interrogated these last week to discover that the major 80k service was done on an elapsed time basis when the car had done only 32k, and as a result, the plugs and diff oils were not changed during the service. Diff oils were done later, but no evidence of plug or fuel filter change. Going away to get it dirty on the weekend, so off to toyota this morning, and I have just changed plugs and fuel filter.

But here is the strange thing... The plugs on the passenger side were NGK, and the drivers side were Denso. All definitely looked nearly 90k old. The electrode on the NGKs were more eroded than the Denso. Has anyone noticed the factory installing different brands of plug? Might explain the car being hard to start and a bit heavy on fuel...

    Hey 150GXLSA,

Sorry you haven't gotten a response on this as of yet. My understanding is that Toyota used the longer life spark plugs (NGK's) on the passenger side as they are more difficult to get to where as the drivers side had the regular denso's as they can be changed with no access issues (once the air filter assembly is removed).

I have seen this in a number of manufacturers cars (Magna V6's require the intake manifold to come off to replace the rear bank of 3 plugs so they use iridium plugs in those cylinders while the front bank uses standard plugs).

I have done this job on my 120 and it's not overly difficult, I ran the same plugs throughout although originally I had the "mixed bag" that you described.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Pitbull. I am happy with that, although as you say, the job is not difficult on a 120. As I mentioned, the NGKs looked in worse shape than the Densos, so maybe Toyota need to use a different 'long life' plug!

      Thanks again for the response.

or maybe they just need to man up and do their job and change them. surely not that hard, in the end someone is paying for it.... but with toyota you just dont know.

        Cheers Joel

Honestly it is a half hour job to do all 6 even with the access issues on the passenger side so I agree with you Joel.

No probs 150GXLSA - it surprised me too when I first pulled them out to be honest.

toyota have been doing this for ages according to u.s tacoma forums. apparently its because toyota is sponsored by both brands so they just use both plugs in their v6 and v8 engines
