  • 1KZ-TE (TZ) Intermittent white smoke, running rough and stalling

Hi Guys, long time lurker first time poster. Hoping someone can help me out with a problem I have with my '97 KZJ95 TZ Prado with 1KZ-TE engine.

On numerous random occasions the engine won’t idle (unless given throttle), runs very rough and blows white smoke. The car can be limped short distances when this happens but I am reluctant to keep driving like this. This has happened in both very hot and very cold weather. Has happened whilst driving along, when started first thing in the morning and also when stopped then started. Runs fine for a month or so then randomly happens again. Has also cleared by itself multiple times

As a result I have now had the car towed twice to two different specialist diesel workshops: First time they claimed vacuum hose was off; Second time: claimed dirty electrical connectors to diesel pump (also sprayed aerostart into intake with no improvement, compression tested low but all even (300psi, 290psi, 290psi, 300psi).

Recently the engine has had new glow plugs, new fuel filter and recond injectors. Problem has occurred both before and after all of the above. I have also cleaned the MAP sensor filter. There has been no loss of coolant or overheating and no increase in oil level and priming hand pump doesn’t help. The check engine light has not yet come on.

I am at a loss as to what is causing it as it seems fine for many weeks then becomes essentially undriveable. I am a former motor mechanic with little diesel experience so want to try and resolve this myself before undergoing more expense with towing and workshops. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I haven't seen a MAP sensor filter on any KZJ95, where is that filter located?

I would still be suspicious of a cracked head, have you done a hydrocarbon test on the coolant when very hot? These donks can be perfectly well behaved until hot enough that the hairline crack between the waterjacket and the precombustion chamber opens up, then they play up. Has it done this from dead cold or only when hot? Mine just went bang, but others have had to remove the heads and do a HOT pressure test to find the crack, some did not even show then.

Hey Steve, thanks for the reply. The filter I am talking about is the the one attached for turbo boost pressure. Haven't yet done a hydrocarbon test on the coolant and certainly not ruling out the head at this point. Thing that has me stumped is that it has done it during freezing cold first start in the morning and also whilst fully warmed up and running. I found a case that sounded exactly the same as mine where the head and injector pump were replaced and it still did it, which has me keeping a little broad minded.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that it has been using oil. Not sure if worn turbo seal might also cause the problem? Wouldn't think it would be as intermittent as it is though.

Being a 97 its a early version 90 series.... cable throttle, different injection pump there Bassicly the same as a 93-99 1kz surf
          Try surf forums
Its more than likely a sensor or injection pump failing
Injector pumps are around 1300 rebuilt if you pull it off
Iv seen many that have all kinds of intermittent faults

Thanks for the reply Scott. Had the RAA out looking at it yesterday. Turns out the smoke is more of a blue / grey colour rather than white. It doesn't smell like coolant burning, so hopefully all clear on the head front. It did however blow out some pretty large clumps of carbon and it seems that it is getting over-fueled quite badly. From the surf forums I am starting to think it's either the spill control valve or the ECU (leaking capacitors). It's with the workshop now, so will see how it goes.

Yeah leaking capacitors seem to be common although my surf had over 300k on it with non of those probs
Mate had a 1kz surf with only 150k on it injector pump buggered

Ok, so got the car back yesterday. Had a good chat with the mechanic and it turns out the problem wasn't exactly over fueling but lack of airflow. He found that the anti-shudder valve diaphragm actuator was getting stuck and not allowing enough air through at idle. It has been freed up and the vacuum line disconnected and plugged at this point but the car does shudder a bit on shut off. Still wouldn't mind fixing it if I can find the parts, as it is also supposed to stop run away.
