  • Handbrake is out of adjustment after going off-road

Each time I go off-road, the handbrake gets looser by 2-3 clicks. I get it re-adjusted, and it stays ok until the next 4WD trip. That has repeated 3 times already. Has anybody come across this problem?

Dirt / grit gets into the drum and wears the pads but also sometimes they can rattle loose.

Yeah really common, I have adjusted mine heaps of times and recently replaced the shoes as well, just one of the things you will have to do.

Did you find a permanent solution? It's fine in the morning and it is loose in the evening without driving through any mud, so I do not think it can be explained by the shoes wearing out. It stays OK for weeks until I go off-road. The only explanation I can find is that the adjuster unwinds when the drum shakes.

Stay out of mud & water.
          Or
          Keep adjusting

I experience this issues as well with my 150. Haven't adjusted it myself yet but got it corrected at each dealer service, of which the vehicle just went in for it's last, so I guess I'm on my own now.

I looked through the service manual to find out how to adjust it and it says to pull the console out and adjust at the back of the lever, is this what everyone does or is it better to do it at the wheels?

Rwo, you need to take the wheels off and adjust the shoes using a flat screwdriver. You can look under the console to remove the cable slack, but I think it takes years for the cable to stretch, probably 150 series has not been around long enough. It won't hurt checking anyway, but do not adjust the shoes using the cable/lever adjuster.

I thought that the adjuster unwinds when shaken hard during 4WD-ing because the spring that fixes it is no good. I replaced the springs, but it did not seem to help. I think that the gap between the shoes and drum is very small and dirt rubs the shoes off very fast once it is in there. The approach that I'm going to explore is not to adjust it for a while and see if it will stabilise at some point when the gap is big enough. If the handbrake is still working at that point, then I won't bother any more.

How many clicks does it take to hold the car on a decent slope?

Replacement shoes are cheap but it's a bugger of a job to replace them, if I was spending money I would get new shoes rather than an extension for more adjustment.
