  • DAC - how to use it ?

    Hi All,
I've read the owner's manual and 4wd manual but they just tell you how to turn on DAC.
My question is, how to actually use the system ?

Eg - I'm stopped at the top of a sand dune about to descend. I have the car in low range (DAC only works in low range according to the manual).
I hit the DAC button, then do I just let the brake off (my car is automatic) and the car will drive itself down the dune slowly ?
I tried this a while back, nothing happened. I was too scared to accelerate and trust the DAC to do the braking so I manually braked the whole way down the dune.

What is the correct process ?

    Thanks !

I think from memory mine only works in low gear low range. I turned mine on while stopped and then let it roll on down the hill and DAC was active. I turned it off after a while and braked manually as it is not exactly smooth or quiet. (Think ABS going on and off 5 times a second).

so you just let your foot off the brake (is yours auto ?) and it started moving ? what surface was it on ?
mine was on soft sand so maybe idle speed wasn't enough to overcome the sand and start the vehicle moving.

The vehicle needs to be down the incline far enough to move by itself. At this point apply the brakes, and turn on DAC, then let go of the brakes. You must be in low range first gear. The range of products in the https://www.catalogueau.com/target/ is something.

You need to be in low 1st or 2nd gear when you engage the dac. From memory once you apply the brake, it will disengage. It sounds like your diffs and gears are being ripped apart, but that is normal. Once it is engaged, just focus on keeping the car pointing in the right direction.
Also, I have heard that it can overheat and fail if used too much or too long. I have not encountered this yet and have used it on some long steep descents, but have always been ready to take control with the foot brake if needed.
Besides what some old die-hards may say, the dac is a great feature to make things even easier and protect the car more. Yes, you can get away without it but this then relies more on driver skill, the dac just makes it easier.

Keep it turned off and learn to use your gears and left foot braking.

I find that DAC makes the descent too slow...well on what I've used it for...low range first (auto gear box) is pretty good for the steep stuff.
The first time I used DAC I pooped my pants as I thought the car was broken. I quickly worked out that thats how its supposed to sound, but the function only gets used if i cant keep control using the gears and my foot.

you guys that use your gears, are you talking about manual gearboxes ? I thought the automatic (like mine) didn't provide enough braking to be useful in this situation ?

low range 1st in the auto will control your decent quite well.
occasional left foot braking may be required on really steep stuff.

Yep, Just be aware it will take about 1/2 second to engage. That's the cheek clenching moment. There are very few hills that low 1st won't slow you down. A few touches of the brake will keep it under control.

I generally control the descent speed changing between 1st, 2nd and 3rd. (That's in my 08 gxl diesel auto)
